Definition:
The City of Palos Verdes Estates Police Department is seeking professional and responsible individuals that make important decisions quickly, and possess strong customer service skills. Successful candidates must communicate courteously and tactfully with patrons and work well under stress.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is a part-time unrepresented classification in which incumbents learn and gain additional qualifications in preparation for a career in law enforcement.
Under supervision, a Police Service Aide performs a wide variety of entry level, support and paraprofessional police services duties in a learning capacity; assists and observes Police Officers and non-sworn police personnel and performs related work as assigned.

  • Operates police computer systems, and telephones to research information at the direction of an Officer or police civilian; assists in processing, packaging, labeling, storing and destroying property and evidence;
  • Photocopies, files, indexes and locates police records and related paperwork;
  • Rides with officers to observe and learn peace officer responsibilities and techniques;
  • Performs errands for the department such as transporting information and paperwork to court and district attorney offices;
  • Provides traffic direction and control for commuter traffic and special events;
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

The level and scope of the knowledge and skills listed below are related to job duties as defined under Class Characteristics.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:
  • Basic law enforcement terminology and concepts; and
  • Techniques for dealing with people of all socio economic levels under hostile and emergency situations.
  • Observing and accurately recalling places, names, descriptive characteristics and facts of incidents;
  • Remaining calm and controlling own emotions in tense situations;
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work;
  • Preparing clear and concise reports, records and other written materials, and
  • Understanding and following oral and written directions.
  • Learn the principles, practices, procedures, laws and ordinances, terminology and operation of equipment used in law enforcement and crime prevention and investigation.

Special Requirements:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Have a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalent.

  • Possession of a valid California state driver license.

  • Must be able to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Palos Verdes Estates to meet the program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities.
  • Must be able to drive on the freeway.

Physical Requirements:
Position requires sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination in preparing reports using a computer keyboard.
Additionally, the need to lift, drag and push objects weighing up to 50 pounds is required.
The position requires possession of satisfactory hearing capabilities and visual acuity of at least 20/100 correctable to at least 20/30 in each eye, and be able to meet physical and background standards.
Ability to adapt to exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, and mechanical hazards; ability to travel to different sites and locations.

Paid Leave Time:
