SUMMARY/SCOPE:
The primary job of a Police Officer is to provide a safeand secure environment for all members of the University community throughalert and thorough preventative patrol. In addition, they must be equally concerned with the courteous deliveryof a wide variety of services consistent with the needs of students, faculty,staff and general public. To effectively accomplish these purposes, allofficers must have a clear understanding of their powers, duties,responsibilities, and limitations, and conduct themselves at all times withcourtesy and an attitude of service. The police officers are subject to thedirection of the Police Sergeant, Police Lieutenant and, ultimately, the Chiefof Police. All officers will maintain aprofessional demeanor when interacting with any person on campus. They will complete the necessary initialinvestigations and other reports as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: These examples do not include all possible tasks & do not limit theassignment of related tasks.
Preserve the peace and resolve any conflict within the University area.
Create and maintain a sense of safety and security within the University community.
Assist all persons in danger of physical harm or victims of crime, accidents, or sudden illness.
Take effective measures to reduce opportunities for criminal activity within the University area.
Identify criminal offenders, making arrests as necessary, and participate in subsequent court of discipline proceedings.
Respond to initial complaints of crime and incidents restoring calm, taking necessary action, and initiating appropriate reports.
Report any security problems, unsafe conditions, and fire or safety hazards for correction to their supervisor.
Prepare all reports accurately, legibly, and completely.
Facilitate the movement of vehicular traffic on and around the University enforcing moving traffic and parking regulations.
Courteously assist all persons in the University area seeking directions, information, or assistance.
Acknowledge and respond without delay to calls for service.
Enforce University rules and regulations, local ordinances, and state law in a fair and equitable manner.
Perform other duties as directed by appropriate authority.
Enforceslaws related to the protection of life and property, directs and controlstraffic, prevents crime or disturbance of peace, and arrests violators byperforming the following duties:
Patrolsassigned area on foot, in patrol car, or to enforce laws, prevent and discovercrimes, investigate crimes, maintain order, and answer calls and complaints.
Answers radio-dispatched or citizens'requests for police services at the scene of accidents, domestic disputes, lawviolations, and peace disturbances.
Familiarizes self with beat and withpersons living in area.
Investigates illegal or suspiciousactivities, persons, and establishments, and quells disturbances.
Locates, searches, detains, and arrestslaw violators, following recognized police procedures.
Interviews and questions victims,witnesses, and suspects.
Gathers and preserves evidence.
Performs first aid and provides otherassistance to accident and other victims.
Investigates causes and results ofaccidents.
Directs and controls traffic.
Issues written citations for traffic andother minor violations.
Operates police communication andcomputer equipment to obtain, disseminate, and report information.
Attends community meetings to discusscrime prevention activities and crime problems.
Writes detailed incident, investigation,activity, and other reports.
Testifies in court to present evidenceby describing conditions, situations, and actions.

Thisjob has no supervisory responsibilities, except for student workers.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules,operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups ofcustomers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units ofmeasure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentand to draw and interpret bar graphs.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED required.
Certified Peace Officer;demonstrated quality work as a police officer.
Three or more years ofexperience in law enforcement preferred.
Collaborative, effective,team leader with a strong commitment to workingin collaboration with a diverse population of direct reports, senioradministrators, faculty, staff, students, parents, and alumni. Enthusiastic about working in a team-orientedenvironment. Excellent interpersonal (Emotional Intelligence) and communication skills required (ability to clearlyexpress ideas and concepts orally and in writing). Demonstrated ability to benchmark and use data to informthe development of best practices. Strongcommitment to the values of diversity and human compassion. Demonstrated understanding of changing student needs and ability to articulate these needs to the University community. Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated andautonomous. Experience engaging student crisis and at-risk student needs.

TCOLEPeace Officer License Required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Frequently stands for prolonged periods of time.
Frequent lifting (25-30lbs.) and pushing or pulling items may be required.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Full-Time positions require a 40-hour work-week. The current openposition is for the night shift (10PM - 8AM) and may require working weekends.
Part-Time positions require either "up to 19 hours" per weekor "20-29 hours" per week depending on what is needed at the time.
On-call duty may occasionally be required when a responseis necessary.
All hours worked beyond 40 hours in a single work week willbe compensated at time and a half, per FLSA guidelines.
Must have and maintain a valid Class C Drivers License andmaintain a clear driving record to be insurable under the university liabilitypolicy.
Must be able to drive to complete work assignments on andoff campus, as needed.
