What is a point cloud?

A Point Cloud job involves working with 3D data representations of physical spaces, typically generated from LiDAR scans or photogrammetry. Professionals in this field process, analyze, and manipulate point cloud datasets for applications in construction, engineering, surveying, and mapping. They use specialized software to clean, classify, and convert raw point cloud data into useful models or visualizations. This role often requires expertise in 3D modeling, GIS, or CAD software, along with a strong understanding of spatial data.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a point cloud specialist?

As a Point Cloud Specialist, your daily tasks often include processing and analyzing raw 3D data from LiDAR or photogrammetry sources, cleaning and aligning point clouds, and converting them into usable models or maps. You’ll collaborate closely with surveyors, engineers, or architects to ensure your data meets project requirements and integrates smoothly with other digital assets. Attention to quality control and detail is important, as your deliverables often form the foundation for design, construction, or spatial analysis work. In addition, you might be tasked with troubleshooting data inconsistencies or optimizing workflows to improve efficiency and accuracy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the point cloud position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Point Cloud Specialist, you need a strong foundation in 3D spatial data processing, knowledge of surveying principles, and experience with geospatial software, often supported by a degree in geomatics or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as LiDAR scanners, point cloud processing software (like Autodesk ReCap or CloudCompare), and CAD/GIS systems is essential. Attention to detail, analytical problem-solving, and effective communication are key soft skills for success in this role. These competencies are crucial for producing accurate and actionable 3D models that support engineering, construction, or mapping projects.

Job description

The Digital Built Environment Technician will support the creation of accurate 3D models of existing facilities, primarily using Revit and point cloud data produced with various reality capture workflows. Working with our Buildings Business Line as part of our Digital Built Environment team, this role will focus on scan-to-BIM (as-built modeling) with a strong emphasis on MEPF systems in complex facilities such as hospitals, airports, educational facilities, etc.
Collaborating closely with project managers, engineers, modelers, and scanning technicians, the ideal candidate will bring both technical precision and communication skills to ensure accurate modeling of existing conditions. This role is critical to the success of our reality capture and as-built modeling initiatives, leveraging the latest BIM and point cloud technologies.
Primary responsibilities will include:
  • Develop accurate and detailed 3D BIM models in Revit, based on point cloud data and existing building documentation.
  • Produce high-quality drawing sets including plans, sections, elevations, and 3D details within Revit.
  • Process and interpret point cloud data (from sources such as LiDAR scanners and mobile mapping systems) to inform accurate as-built modeling.
  • Participate in clash detection efforts and assist in coordinating issue resolution between design teams, VDC teams, and construction stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including architectural, structural, and MEPF disciplines, to support both design and reality capture projects.
  • Perform QA/QC checks to verify model accuracy, adherence to company BIM standards, and alignment with project-specific requirements.
Requirements
  • Proficiency in Autodesk Revit for modeling and documentation of building systems.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in both modeling and documentation.
  • Clear and professional communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines.
  • Familiarity with point cloud processing tools (e.g., ReCap, NavVis, or similar) and Scan-to-BIM workflows is preferred.
  • Experience with MEPF modeling, construction documentation, or as-built modeling is a plus.
