Hudson Institute seeks a media relations manager to develop and operationalize Hudson's media strategy, proactively promote Hudson's research and analysis, and interface with press. This is a full-time position based out of Hudson's Washington, DC, office, reporting to the director of external affairs.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and executes Hudson's media strategy to broaden awareness among key audiences: journalists, policymakers, experts, and supporters.
  • Proactively secures media opportunities for Hudson by pitching experts, research, policy memos, reports, and commentary to journalists covering breaking news and long-term policy issues.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with reporters, editors, producers, and bookers across print, digital, television, radio, and podcast outlets.
  • Fields and responds to press inquiries and schedules and facilitates interviews for experts with media outlets.
  • Pitches op-eds for experts, facilitating communication between editors and Hudson experts throughout the publication process.
  • Maintains comprehensive media lists and facilitates media coverage of Hudson events. 
  • Collaborates with digital media manager to identify Hudson experts, research, and content to promote across social media channels, including coordinating newsworthy social media content and event highlights.
  • Engages Hudson's research staff to identify, develop, and communicate compelling stories, and regularly implements new communications approaches.
  • Tracks breaking news and trending topics to leverage Hudson's policy work and expertise in real-time media opportunities. 
  • Tracks Hudson media coverage, requesting corrections when necessary.

Requirements

  • Commitment to Hudson Institute's mission and supporting the work of the Institute's experts and staff.
  • Three years' relevant experience in communications, politics, policy, journalism, or other relevant fields.
  • Strong news judgment and public policy savvy.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with reporters and successfully pitch stories to national and policy media.
  • Excellent time and project management skills.
  • Excellent communication and comprehension skills, both written and oral, including professional and tactful demeanor in dealing with press.
  • Ability to work closely and effectively with others.
  • Creative and entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Commitment to acting with integrity and the utmost professionalism. 

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary: $60,000 - $80,000 per year
