They work with cloud services, automation, and scripting to ensure scalable, reliable, and efficient platforms for applications. Strong knowledge of systems, networking, and scripting languages is essential for this role.

What are Platform Engineers?

Platform Engineers are IT professionals who design, build, and maintain the foundational technology systems (or platforms) that enable software development and operations teams to deploy and manage applications efficiently. Their work involves creating scalable, reliable, and automated infrastructure, often using tools like cloud services, container orchestration, and CI/CD pipelines. Platform Engineers collaborate closely with developers, DevOps, and IT teams to ensure that the technology stack supports business needs and software delivery. They help streamline workflows, improve system reliability, and enable faster release cycles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Platform Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Platform Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science, systems architecture, and cloud infrastructure, often supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with containerization tools (like Docker and Kubernetes), infrastructure-as-code platforms (such as Terraform), and cloud services (AWS, Azure, or GCP) is typically required, along with relevant certifications. Strong problem-solving skills, collaboration, and effective communication help Platform Engineers drive reliability and innovation within technical teams. These competencies are crucial for building scalable, secure, and efficient platforms that support an organization's technology needs.

How does a Platform Engineer typically collaborate with development and operations teams?

Platform Engineers work closely with both development and operations teams to design, build, and maintain scalable infrastructure and deployment pipelines. They often serve as a bridge, ensuring that applications can be deployed reliably and efficiently while meeting the requirements of both teams. Regular communication is key, as Platform Engineers gather feedback from developers about tooling needs and coordinate with operations to uphold system stability and security. This collaborative environment fosters automation, streamlines workflows, and supports continuous delivery practices.

Job description

About Us

Clayco is a full-service, turnkey real estate development, master planning, architecture, engineering, and construction firm that safely delivers clients across North America the highest quality solutions on time, on budget, and above and beyond expectations. With $8.1 billion in revenue for 2025, Clayco specializes in the "art and science of building," providing fast track, efficient solutions for mission critical, industrial, life sciences, power & energy, aviation, commercial, institutional, residential and sports & entertainment related building projects.

The Role We Want You For

Clayco is seeking a Senior ServiceNow Platform Engineer to own the health, quality, and strategic direction of our ServiceNow environment. The platform has grown significantly and accumulated customizations in some areas that increase maintenance burden and complicate upgrades — this role carries an explicit mandate to assess, rationalize, and modernize, while keeping day-to-day operations running smoothly. Reporting to the Application Portfolio Manager, this is a hands-on role for someone who has seen what good looks like and is motivated to get there.

The Specifics of the Role

  • Assess existing customizations to identify unnecessary complexity, upgrade risk, and deviation from platform best practices
  • Build and execute a rationalization roadmap, moving toward out-of-the-box functionality where appropriate and establishing governance to prevent recurrence
  • Maintain living documentation of platform architecture and deliberate customizations with clear business justification
  • Manage users, groups, roles, ACLs, upgrades, instance hygiene, and environment governance across DEV/TEST/PROD
  • Build and maintain Business Rules, Client Scripts, Script Includes, Flow Designer workflows, and service catalog configurations
  • Support and troubleshoot integrations via REST/SOAP APIs, IntegrationHub, MID Servers, and enterprise identity platforms
  • Administer and support ITSM (Incident, Change, Problem), IRM, SecOps, and CMDB modules in alignment with IT and business requirements
  • Maintain CMDB accuracy including CI lifecycle management, Discovery hygiene, reconciliation, and relationship mapping
  • Build and maintain reports, dashboards, and Performance Analytics for IT leadership and business stakeholders
  • Serve as Tier 2/3 escalation point for platform issues; collaborate with business partners to translate needs into platform capabilities
  • Partner with the APM and IT leadership to balance operational demands with the platform improvement roadmap
  • Provide guidance to end users and process owners; push back constructively on requests that would reintroduce technical debt

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent experience
  • ServiceNow CSA preferred; CIS-DF (Data Foundations/CMDB) strongly preferred given CMDB scope of this role
  • Additional CIS certifications a plus: CIS-Discovery, CIS-ITSM, CIS-SecOps, CIS-Risk, CIS-APM; ITIL Foundation a plus
  • 5–7 years of hands-on ServiceNow platform engineering in a production environment
  • Demonstrated experience inheriting and remediating over-customized ServiceNow instances
  • Working knowledge of ITSM modules; experience supporting these processes without necessarily owning configuration end-to-end
  • Prior experience in construction, engineering, or professional services is a plus
  • Proficiency in ServiceNow administration, configuration, and scripting: Business Rules, Client Scripts, Script Includes, Flow Designer, GlideScript/JavaScript
  • Experience with DEV/TEST/PROD environment management including update sets, clone strategy, deployment governance, and upgrade support
  • Integration experience: REST/SOAP APIs, IntegrationHub, MID Servers, OAuth, and enterprise identity platforms (SSO/SAML, SCIM/JIT, RBAC)
  • CMDB and Discovery administration including CI lifecycle, reconciliation, and relationship mapping
  • Comfort troubleshooting platform performance, scheduled jobs, workflows, and integrations in complex enterprise environments
  • Exposure to HAM, SAM, SecOps, or IRM modules strongly preferred; Workplace Service Delivery a plus
  • Analytical and structured; able to assess a complex platform and identify the highest-leverage improvements
  • Clear communicator; able to present technical findings and tradeoffs to non-technical stakeholders and leadership
  • Self-directed and service-oriented — balances a long-term improvement agenda with day-to-day responsiveness
