AspectPlastics RnPlastics Technician
CertificationsRN license, specialized plastics safety trainingTechnical diploma or certification in plastics manufacturing
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, quality control, research settingsManufacturing plants, production lines
Job FocusResearch, testing, quality assuranceOperating machinery, production processes

While both roles involve working with plastics, Plastics Rn typically focuses on research, testing, and quality assurance in laboratory or research settings, requiring an RN license and specialized training. What are Plastics RNs?

Plastics RNs are registered nurses who specialize in caring for patients undergoing plastic or reconstructive surgery. Their responsibilities include preoperative and postoperative care, assisting surgeons during procedures, managing wounds, and educating patients about recovery and self-care. Plastics RNs work closely with surgical teams to ensure patient safety and optimal outcomes. They may work in hospitals, outpatient surgical centers, or private practices focused on cosmetic or reconstructive procedures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Plastics RN, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Plastics RN, you need a solid background in surgical nursing, wound care, and patient assessment, typically supported by an RN license and experience in perioperative or aesthetic settings. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), surgical instruments, and specialized equipment for cosmetic or reconstructive procedures is essential. Strong communication, attention to detail, and compassion are vital soft skills for educating patients and supporting their recovery. These skills and qualities are critical for ensuring safe, effective care and a positive patient experience in plastic surgery environments.

What are some common challenges a Plastics RN may face when working with surgical patients?

Plastics RNs often care for patients undergoing complex reconstructive or cosmetic surgeries, which can present unique challenges such as managing intricate wound care, providing detailed patient education on post-operative recovery, and addressing patients' emotional concerns regarding body image changes. Additionally, Plastics RNs frequently coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, requiring strong communication skills to ensure cohesive care plans. Staying updated on the latest surgical techniques and infection control standards is also essential for optimal patient outcomes.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Plastic Surgery Office Nurse is a versatile Registered Nurse who supports the full continuum of patient care in our accredited, physician-led cosmetic surgery practice. This role blends perioperative nursing - circulating in the operating room and recovering patients in the PACU - with clinic-based responsibilities including preoperative histories and physicals, GLP-1 weight management program support, and assisting with minor in-office procedures. The ideal candidate is adaptable, patient-focused, and comfortable moving between the surgical suite and the clinic as the daily schedule requires.
BENEFITS PACKAGE:
  • Competitive Compensation.
  • Medical, Vision, and dental insurance.
  • Mental Health + Wellness Benefits
  • Paid vacation and holidays.
  • 401k with company match.
  • Company-paid life insurance.
  • Scrub allowance.
  • Employee assistance program.
  • Team Member discounts.
  • Professional development assistance.

[*some benefits vary based on part-time vs. full-time employment status]
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Perioperative - Operating Room
  • Circulate in the operating room, serving as the patient's advocate and the liaison between the sterile field and the rest of the surgical suite.
  • Set up the operating room with supplies, equipment, and medications for each procedure; assist with room turnover and decontamination between cases.
  • Maintain strict aseptic technique, traffic control, and a sterile environment; perform accurate instrument, sponge, and controlled substance counts.
  • Prepare and administer medications and injections as ordered by the physician, and process specimens to the lab.

Perioperative - PACU / Recovery
  • Monitor patients and deliver skilled nursing care through all phases of post-anesthesia recovery.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of sedation medications, dosing, and reversal agents, and respond appropriately to the overly sedated patient.
  • Provide discharge teaching and communicate physician instructions clearly to patients, families, and outside care providers.

Clinic & Office Nursing
  • Complete preoperative histories, physicals, and nursing assessments, including allergies/sensitivities, medications, and past medical and surgical history.
  • Support the practice's GLP-1 weight management program: patient screening and education, medication administration and self-injection teaching, weight and side-effect monitoring, and follow-up per physician protocol.
  • Assist providers with minor in-office procedures, including room setup, patient prep, instrumentation, and post-procedure care.
  • Perform suture and drain removal, dressing changes, and injections as ordered and within RN scope of practice.
  • Conduct pre- and post-operative patient education and respond to clinical patient calls, triaging concerns and escalating to providers as appropriate.
  • Assist with photography, charting, and documentation supporting consultations and follow-up visits.

Compliance, Documentation & Operations
  • Complete and maintain accurate medical records in accordance with facility and regulatory standards.
  • Ensure compliance with accreditation standards and organizational policies, including biomedical waste handling and sterilization quality control.
  • Assist with instrument processing and sterilization, supply and medication inventory, and day-to-day operational needs.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times and perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Current, unencumbered Registered Nurse license in the Commonwealth of Virginia (or valid multistate compact license).
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification (or ability to obtain prior to start).
  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience; perioperative, PACU, ambulatory surgery, or plastic surgery office experience strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with GLP-1 medications and weight management protocols a plus.
  • Working knowledge of operating room equipment, sterilization processes, and aseptic technique.
  • Strong assessment, communication, and critical-thinking skills with a patient-first mindset and flexibility to support both surgical and clinic operations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods; lift and position patients with assistance; lift up to 30 pounds; and maintain visual and auditory acuity sufficient for patient monitoring. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
