Job description

Position: Packaging Engineer, New Product Development
Location: New Albany, Ohio
Department: New Product Development
Reports to: Packaging Development Director
Shifts: 8 am - 5 pm
JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Director of New Product Development, leads new packaging projects from concept through first-piece approval and production start-up. Responsible for the design, development, implementation, and project management of packaging solutions, including customer-requested changes, new product introductions, material conversions, cost-reduction initiatives, equipment development, and quality and regulatory requirements.
Partners with Quality, Production, Sales, Purchasing, suppliers, and customers to ensure packaging designs meet intent and deliver manufacturability, cost targets, quality standards, and customer expectations. Provides technical leadership through effective specification control and a disciplined handoff to production to support successful execution.
Brings hands-on experience in packaging design, manufacturing processes, and project management, with the ability to identify and implement new packaging opportunities in collaboration with internal teams, customers, and external vendors. May provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior team members.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Develop and maintain packaging and component specifications, bills of materials (BOMs), and drawings to support new product development and production readiness.
  • Lead component design activities for metal and/or plastic packaging, including tolerance analysis, drawing/print review, and specification control, to enable successful development, qualification, and production launch.
  • Manage packaging development projects through design, testing, validation, and start-up to meet timeline, cost, quality, and customer requirements.
  • Own and maintain component part numbers, drawings, specifications, and related engineering documentation.
  • Collaborate with customers, suppliers, Sales, Quality, and Operations to develop packaging solutions that meet technical, aesthetic, and commercial requirements.
  • Support quotation activities by evaluating designs, materials, manufacturing methods, and project costs for new opportunities.
  • Review product and component designs with a strong focus on manufacturability, tolerances, material performance, and quality requirements.
  • Ensure project data, reports, test results, specifications, and development records are complete, accurate, and maintained in accordance with documentation standards.
  • Ensure appropriate test methods, validation protocols, and quality checks are followed throughout development and launch.
  • Identify and support new packaging opportunities and continuous improvement initiatives in collaboration with plant leadership, suppliers, and cross-functional teams.
  • Contribute to a performance-driven culture focused on innovation, accountability, on-time execution, and a successful handoff to production.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Packaging Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • 5+ years of experience in packaging development, component design, manufacturing engineering, or new product development; experience in metal or plastic packaging, cosmetics/personal care, and/or decorative components preferred.
  • 5+ years of project management experience leading cross-functional projects from concept through launch.
  • Demonstrated experience designing metal and/or plastic packaging components, including tolerance development, drawing/print review, specification control, and design-for-manufacturability.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing processes such as forming, molding, assembly, finishing, decoration, and quality testing.
  • Proficiency with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks); familiarity with Adobe Illustrator or similar programs preferred.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills; able to partner effectively across engineering, operations, quality, suppliers, customers, and commercial teams.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to think strategically while driving detailed technical execution and on-time delivery.
