Overview

The Senior Mechanical Engineer  position is an exciting opportunity to join PM Group’s quickly growing Boston area team in Burlington, MA.  Together we will all be sharing knowledge, learning, growing, and continuing to be an integral part of supporting PM Group’s ongoing expansion in the US.  Our office will be executing cutting-edge projects for Pharmaceutical, Biologics and Cell & Gene Therapy, manufacturing facilities – from feasibility through to qualification – for both local and international clients.  Together with our clients and partners, we will deliver projects that improve the everyday lives of people across the globe.

This is a senior-level career position and we are looking for an Engineer who enjoys client interaction as well as the technical aspects of the position.  This individual needs to have an understanding of the technical aspects of mechanical design engineering including but not limited to HVAC, plant utilities, and process utilities interfaces design. The ability to successfully handle multiple real-time complex project and operational tasks as well as maintain a strong work ethic and drive to deliver for clients as a collaborative colleague are a must for this role. The Senior Mechanical Engineer  will be mentored by high level Mechanical Engineering team members and will develop  design documents such as P&ID’s, utility consumption summaries, plant & process utility distribution systems, pressurization plans, airflow diagrams, ductwork & piping plans, equipment/construction specifications, temperature & humidity control calculations, etc. They will also be involved with the mentoring and development to less experienced mechanical engineering team members.  Expect project work to include all levels of design: feasibility studies, conceptual & schematic design, construction documentation, and construction administration. Project sizes will vary and will consist primarily of life science industry projects doing both existing building improvements and new construction.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions

  • Ownership of equipment modules and packages through design and procurement phases
  • Generation of Schedules, Data Sheets and Specification Packages for procurement of equipment
  • Generation of Technical Bid Tab Evaluation of vendors in compliance with Client specifications
  • Developing Technical Specifications in compliance with Client requirements
  • Development of each package through Kick-off meetings, Design Reviews, FAT’s etc.
  • Interface with suppliers to ensure packages are designed, manufactured and tested as per project requirements
  • Interfacing with clients, vendors, client project management and other disciplines ensuring the highest level of service is provided
  • Interfacing with client design team/end users
  • Mechanical optimization/site support
  • Delivery of agreed design scope within budget hours and schedule
  • Special projects as assigned

Typical areas of design include:

  • Lead the development of HVAC, black utility (chilled water, heating hot water, and steam), plumbing, and compressed gas system philosophies
  • Development of project documents (e.g. calculations, reports and construction drawings and specifications, etc.) for clients, according to regulatory and industry standards
  • Code analysis and application related to the Mechanical, HVAC and Plumbing disciplines.
  • Coordination with other internal disciplines as well as external team members (e.g. vendors, clients, and contractors)
  • Researching mechanical / utility materials and methods as required
  • Leading the design development of project packages and coordinating with the design team at the direction of the Head of Mechanical Engineering.
  • Developing Mechanical / Utility equipment and construction specifications
  • Developing temperature / humidity control calculations, airflow diagrams, pressurization plans and classification plans
  • Equipment selections based on completion of equipment schedules
  • Knowledge of Energy Modeling using HAP software is a plus
  • Developing static pressure and pump head calculations where applicable
  • Sizing and developing layouts for ductwork and piping plans
  • Sizing and developing layouts for underground and above ground piping plans
  • Sizing and developing layouts for compressed gas plans
  • Development of the building management system (BMS) control philosophy, details, specifications and plans
  • Developing utility consumption summaries for compressed gas and plant utilities
  • Developing P&ID’s, equipment plans, plant / utility distribution plans, and system details
  • Performing construction assistance in the form of submittal reviews, RFI responses, and field visits to verify construction by trades match design intent of applicable systems

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 7 + Years of design experience in a design firm setting
  • Life Science experience (Pharmaceutical, Biopharmaceutical, Cell & Gene Therapy sectors)
  • Experience working with AutoCAD and Revit
  • Understanding of and ability to develop Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Professional Engineering (PE) licensure is strongly preferred
  • Self-starter with confidence in coordinating the efforts of others
  • Good communication skills (ability to lead Technical reviews with Clients and Suppliers)
  • Knowledge of GMP Manufacturing environments is preferred
  • The ability to travel as needed for client and project development
