What is a contract manufacturing engineer?

A Contract Manufacturing Engineer is a professional who is hired on a temporary or project basis to manage and optimize manufacturing processes for a company. Their responsibilities often include designing efficient production systems, ensuring product quality, and collaborating with suppliers or contract manufacturers. They may also help with scaling production, troubleshooting issues, and implementing cost-saving measures. Contract Manufacturing Engineers are typically employed for their specialized expertise and flexibility, supporting organizations during periods of transition, growth, or when specific skills are needed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract manufacturing engineer?

To thrive as a Contract Manufacturing Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, manufacturing processes, and quality assurance, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, ERP systems, and Lean or Six Sigma certifications are commonly required for overseeing production efficiency and compliance. Strong project management, problem-solving skills, and effective communication with both internal teams and external vendors make professionals stand out in this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring high-quality, cost-effective manufacturing solutions and seamless collaboration across organizations.

What are some common challenges contract manufacturing engineers face when managing multiple vendor relationships?

Contract Manufacturing Engineers often juggle several vendor relationships simultaneously, which can present challenges in maintaining consistent quality standards, ensuring timely delivery, and managing clear communication across different teams. Balancing the expectations of internal stakeholders with the capabilities and constraints of external partners requires strong organizational and negotiation skills. Proactively addressing production issues and fostering transparent communication with vendors are key strategies for overcoming these challenges and ensuring project success.

Job description

We are seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to join our team and play a critical role in scaling and optimizing our manufacturing operations. This individual will act as the primary point of contact for all manufacturing-related activities with one of our contract manufacturers (CM), overseeing day-to-day execution, production targets, and issue resolution. The Senior Manufacturing Engineer will also lead continuous improvement initiatives and process enhancements to ensure that our manufacturing capabilities can scale as we continue to grow rapidly. This role will involve close collaboration with various cross-functional teams, including Engineering, Supply Chain, and Operations, to support the development and execution of robust manufacturing strategies. The ideal candidate will bring a mix of technical expertise, strategic thinking, and leadership to drive performance excellence.

Your Day to Day
  • Support Manufacturing Operations: Serve as a day-to-day point of contact for manufacturing activities with our contract manufacturer, helping ensure operations align with Bevi's production goals, quality standards, and timelines. Escalate larger issues to senior engineers and leadership.
  • Contribute to Continuous Improvement: Identify and implement improvements to processes, equipment, and materials that increase manufacturing efficiency, reliability, and scalability. Use data to help pinpoint bottlenecks and opportunities.
  • Participate in Problem-Solving: Support cross-functional efforts to resolve manufacturing issues, including quality defects and operational inefficiencies. Apply structured problem-solving methods to perform root cause analysis and help implement corrective actions.
  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Work with internal teams (Engineering, Supply Chain, Quality) and external partners (contract manufacturers, suppliers) to help ensure manufacturing processes meet Bevi's quality and production standards.
  • Support Manufacturing Scalability: Contribute to initiatives that help Bevi's manufacturing capabilities grow with the business, supporting the plans set by senior engineers and leadership.
  • Support Supplier and Vendor Relationships: Assist in working with suppliers and contract manufacturers, providing technical support for process improvements, testing procedures, and quality monitoring.
  • Maintain Documentation and Reporting: Create and maintain manufacturing documentation, including process flows, work instructions, and engineering change orders. Track and report on quality and reliability metrics.
  • Execute Product Design Changes: Help implement design changes, product refreshes, and continuous improvements on existing product lines, working with design and manufacturing teams to integrate changes into production while maintaining quality, cost, and reliability standards.
Requirements
  • Experience: 3-5 years of experience in manufacturing engineering, quality engineering, or process engineering, ideally in a fast-paced or high-growth environment.
  • Manufacturing Support: Experience supporting day-to-day manufacturing activities, ideally with contract manufacturers; helping manage design change cut ins, addressing assembly/test issues, and improving processes.
  • Process Improvement: Working knowledge of continuous improvement and lean manufacturing concepts (e.g., Six Sigma, SPC, Kaizen) and a track record of applying them to improve product quality, efficiency, and cost.
  • Problem-Solving: Solid problem-solving skills, including exposure to structured methodologies such as 8D, 5 Whys, and root cause analysis.
  • Engineering Change Management: Familiarity with engineering change management systems and processes, and the ability to help execute product and process changes.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Ability to work effectively across engineering, quality, supply chain, and operations teams to help ensure products are manufactured to specification, on time, and within budget.
  • Supplier Experience: Experience working with suppliers or contract manufacturers, with an understanding of how quality and cost standards are maintained in production.
  • Data-Driven: Strong analytical skills, with the ability to use data to inform decisions and measure the effectiveness of improvements.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and coordinate across teams.
