Plant Optimization Engineer information

What does a plant optimization engineer do?

A Plant Optimization Engineer is responsible for improving the efficiency, productivity, and safety of industrial plants. They analyze current processes, identify areas for improvement, and implement solutions such as automation, new technologies, or process adjustments. Their work often involves collaborating with other engineers, operators, and management to ensure optimal plant performance while reducing costs and minimizing environmental impact.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a plant optimization engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Plant Optimization Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical, mechanical, or industrial engineering, along with experience in process optimization and data analysis. Familiarity with process simulation software (such as Aspen HYSYS or MATLAB), Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing certifications, and SCADA systems is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and effective communication skills help drive continuous improvement and facilitate cross-functional teamwork. These competencies are crucial for maximizing plant efficiency, reducing costs, and ensuring operational excellence in a competitive manufacturing environment.

What are some typical challenges faced by plant optimization engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Plant Optimization Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing production efficiency with safety and environmental regulations, integrating new technologies into existing processes, and managing cross-functional communication. Addressing these challenges typically involves strong analytical skills, continuous collaboration with operations and maintenance teams, and staying updated on industry best practices. Proactive problem-solving and adaptability are crucial, as is the ability to lead process improvement initiatives while ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing operations.

What is the difference between Plant Optimization Engineer vs Process Engineer?

AspectPlant Optimization EngineerProcess Engineer
Primary FocusMaximizing plant efficiency and performanceDesigning and improving manufacturing processes
Skills & CertificationsProcess optimization, data analysis, engineering fundamentalsProcess design, chemical/industrial engineering, certifications like PE

Key responsibilities

  • Support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the LNG liquefaction facility by monitoring plant performance and ensuring compliance.

  • Develop and automate tools such as dashboards, reports, and alerts to track and improve LNG production performance.

  • Analyze plant data and model outputs to identify optimization opportunities, troubleshoot operational issues, and support operational decisions.

Job description

Venture Global LNG ("Venture Global") is a long-term, low-cost provider of American-produced liquefied natural gas. The company's Louisiana-based export projects service the global demand for North American natural gas and support the long-term development of clean and reliable North American energy supplies. Using reliable, proven technology in an innovative plant design configuration, Venture Global's modular, mid-scale plant design will replace traditional designs as it allows for the same efficiency and operational reliability at significantly lower capital cost.

We are seeking qualified applicants for the position:

Engineer, Production

Located:

Arlington

Summary

We are seeking a Production Engineer to join our Production Excellence team in our Arlington, VA office.

The Production Engineer will report to the Senior Vice-President, Production Excellence and will be supporting the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of our LNG liquefaction facility. This role blends deep production engineering knowledge with a growing suite of digital tools to optimize and monitor plant performance in real time, along with additional responsibilities for ensuring plant operations remain program compliant and that the production volumes are delivered in a safe and reliable manner. The ideal candidate brings experience in LNG or hydrocarbon processing, a strong grasp of process fundamentals, and a passion for using data to improve operations. This is a fast-paced environment requiring drive, enthusiasm, willingness to learn and grow rapidly.

The successful candidate will work alongside Gas Supply, operations, engineering, and Commercial Operations teams-as well as collaborate with business intelligence, data engineering, and machine learning specialists in IT -to build user-friendly tools that drive performance and unlock insights from our production systems. Other elements may involve process modeling and simulation to understand plant performance, optimize production, and support day-to-day application of plant models while contributing to real-time operational decisions and supporting long-term/high impact decision making.

General Description Duties & Responsibilities

Candidate will develop a deep understanding of the Venture Global LNG process and responsibilities including, but not limited to:

  • Help develop tools that track and improve LNG production performance, including dashboards, automated reports, and alerts
  • Translate operating data into actionable insights that improve plant reliability, availability, and throughput
  • Automate the Analysis of production trends, loss events, and deviation from expected performance; support investigations (e.g., RCAs) and mitigation planning
  • Identify opportunities to automate manual tracking and reporting processes, improving accuracy and timeliness of information
  • Analyze plant data and model outputs to identify optimization opportunities and troubleshoot operational issues
  • Assist in evaluating the impact of process changes, debottlenecking studies and efficiency improvements
  • Collaborate with Data Engineers, Data Scientists, and BI Developers to ensure accurate data flows and fit-for-purpose dashboards
  • Provide insights and technical input to the annual delivery plan, production forecasts, and ongoing performance reviews
  • Share learnings across teams and contribute to standardizing best practices across facilities
  • Travel to all our Louisiana LNG Facilities as needed

Qualifications

Required experience

  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in Chemical, Process or Mechanical Engineering discipline is highly desired; however, candidates possessing a Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Process or Mechanical Engineering with demonstrable success improving LNG plant operations using data, analytics, or automation are encouraged to apply
