What is a planning intern?

Planning Interns are students or recent graduates who assist professional planners in areas such as urban planning, environmental planning, or community development. They support tasks like data collection, research, preparing reports, and helping with public outreach. The internship provides hands-on experience in planning processes, tools, and regulations. Planning Interns typically work under the supervision of experienced planners and contribute to real-world projects that impact communities.

What types of projects and tasks can a planning intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Planning Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of projects such as researching zoning regulations, assisting with data collection for community development plans, preparing maps and presentations, and supporting public engagement efforts. Interns often work closely with experienced planners and may attend meetings with stakeholders or local government officials. This exposure helps build practical skills in urban planning and provides valuable insight into how planning teams collaborate to shape community growth and development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a planning intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Planning Intern, you generally need a background in urban planning, geography, or a related field, along with strong research and analytical abilities. Familiarity with GIS software, data analysis tools, and Microsoft Office Suite is typically expected. Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills help you collaborate effectively and manage multiple tasks. These skills and qualifications are crucial for supporting planning projects, analyzing data, and contributing to successful urban development initiatives.
