What are pirate ships?

Pirate ships are vessels used by pirates to carry out acts of piracy at sea, typically during the so-called 'Golden Age of Piracy' from the late 1600s to early 1700s. These ships were often stolen or captured from merchant fleets and then modified for speed, maneuverability, and armament. Common types included sloops, brigantines, and schooners, which were preferred for their speed and ability to navigate shallow waters. Pirate ships were usually equipped with cannons and a large crew to overpower their targets. Life aboard a pirate ship was dangerous but offered a sense of freedom and the lure of riches for those willing to take risks.
