Piping Manager information

What does a piping manager do?

A Piping Manager oversees the planning, design, and installation of piping systems in industrial, commercial, or construction projects. They coordinate teams of engineers, designers, and construction workers to ensure that the piping systems meet safety standards, project specifications, and budget constraints. The role also involves managing schedules, resolving technical issues, and ensuring compliance with industry codes and regulations. Piping Managers often serve as the main point of contact between project stakeholders, ensuring smooth communication and project delivery.

What are the main challenges a piping manager faces when coordinating with multidisciplinary teams on large-scale projects?

A Piping Manager often encounters challenges in aligning the schedules and deliverables of piping with other disciplines such as civil, structural, and electrical engineering. Effective communication and proactive planning are essential to avoid clashes, delays, or rework, especially when working with diverse teams and subcontractors. Utilizing collaborative project management tools and conducting regular coordination meetings help address potential issues early. Adapting quickly to design changes and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards are also key aspects of the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a piping manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Piping Manager, you need expertise in piping design, project management, and a solid engineering background, often supported by a degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard design software (such as AutoCAD, PDMS, or SmartPlant), relevant codes, and certifications like PMP or API are typically required. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are essential soft skills for overseeing teams and coordinating with stakeholders. These skills ensure safe, efficient, and compliant piping systems while meeting project deadlines and quality standards.

Job description

Sky Eye Measurement is seeking a Piping Designer to produce piping layouts, general arrangement drawings, isometrics and supporting deliverables for industrial, energy and facility projects. This is a hands-on production design role suited to a designer with roughly five to ten years of piping design experience who can work independently on defined scopes of work, mentor junior staff, and take a package from concept through issued-for-construction.

PURPOSE:

Piping Designers 3D model plant equipment piping and structural in accordance with company and client specifications. They locate plant equipment to ensure good design practice for operation and maintenance. Working under the direction of a Lead Designer or Project Engineer, the Piping Designer will develop 3D piping models and 2D deliverables from P&IDs, equipment data and client specifications, and will coordinate with process, structural, mechanical and electrical disciplines to deliver constructible, code-compliant designs.

COMPETENCIES & CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Positive, “can-do” attitude
  • Skilled in CADWorx Plant Professional and AutoCAD software
  • Strong attention to detail and a disciplined approach to checking and self-checking work.
  • Clear written and verbal communication with engineers, project managers, vendors and field personnel.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and shifting priorities while meeting deadlines.
  • Sound judgement in raising questions and assumptions early rather than proceeding on unverified information.
  • Collaborative approach to interdisciplinary work and a willingness to mentor junior team members.
  • Commitment to safety in design and to the health and safety practices of the company and its clients.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Design & Modeling

  • Develop 3D piping models and equipment layouts from P&IDs, PFDs, plot plans, vendor drawings and client specifications.
  • Produce piping general arrangement drawings, plans, sections, details, and piping isometrics complete with dimensions, material callouts and weld information.
  • Route piping for constructability, operability, maintenance access, drainage, venting and thermal flexibility while respecting client and project design standards.
  • Develop and maintain piping specifications, line lists, valve lists, tie-in lists and bills of material within the modeling environment.
  • Design and detail pipe supports, guides, anchors and spring supports in coordination with the stress and structural groups.
  • Lay out equipment, skids, modules and structural steel interfaces to suit process and maintenance requirements.
  • Perform material take-offs and support procurement with accurate, current quantities.

Software & Technical Skills

  • CADWorx Plant Professional and related Hexagon tools;
  • AutoCAD — modeling, spec creation, isometric configuration and orthographic extraction.
  • Navisworks — model aggregation, clash detection and coordination review.
  • Competency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel for material take-offs and line lists.
  • Comfortable working within client CAD standards, layer conventions and title block requirements.

Coordination & Interdiscipline Work

  • Coordinate design with process, mechanical, structural, civil, electrical and instrumentation disciplines to resolve interferences and interface issues.
  • Run and review clash detection, resolve clashes, and issue coordination markups to affected disciplines.

Quality, Standards & Documentation

  • Apply relevant codes and standards including ASME B31.1 and B31.3, ASME B16 series, CSA B51, ABSA requirements and applicable provincial regulations.
  • Check and self-check drawings for completeness, accuracy and adherence to project specifications prior to issue.
  • Check the work of junior designers and drafters, providing redlines, direction and technical mentorship.
  • Maintain drawing registers, revision control and squad-check records in accordance with company and client document control procedures.
  • Produce as-built markups and update deliverables to reflect final installed conditions.

Project Support

  • Contribute to continuous improvement of company drafting standards, templates, spec catalogues and design procedures.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Diploma or certificate in Piping Design, Engineering Design & Drafting Technology, CAD/CAM Technology or a related discipline.
  • Five to ten years of progressive piping design experience in oil and gas, petrochemical, industrial, mining, power or a related heavy-industrial sector.
  • Demonstrated ability to take a piping package from P&ID through issued-for-construction with limited supervision.
  • Working knowledge of ASME B31.3 and B31.1, piping materials, valve types, fittings, flange ratings and gasket selection.
  • Strong understanding of pipe support design, stress considerations, and how routing decisions affect flexibility and loading.

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid work environment available as an option
  • Occasional overtime may be required to meet project milestones.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
  • Comprehensive health and dental benefits.
  • Varied project work across multiple industries and client types.
  • Support for continuing education, technical training and professional designation.
  • A collaborative team environment with direct access to senior technical staff.
