What is a pipeliner?

A pipeliner performs maintenance on an oil or gas pipeline. Pipeliners inspect damage to the line, determine the best approach and equipment for the issue, and make repairs to the pipeline. Pipeliners also repair and maintain pumps, valves, and other pipeline parts. Maintaining a pipeline is a group effort, so pipeliners often work as part of a crew to perform maintenance on the pipeline. Similar job titles include pipeline engineer, pipeline laborer, pipeline technician, and pipeline mechanic.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pipeliner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pipeliner, you need strong mechanical aptitude, physical stamina, and a solid understanding of pipeline construction and maintenance, often backed by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with industry tools such as pipe cutters, welding equipment, and safety monitoring systems, as well as certifications like OSHA or NCCER, are typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These abilities are crucial for ensuring safety, maintaining pipeline integrity, and supporting efficient operations in the field.

What are some common challenges faced by pipeliners in the field, and how are they typically addressed?

Pipeliners often encounter challenges such as working in remote or harsh environments, managing safety risks, and coordinating with multiple teams on large-scale projects. Weather conditions, difficult terrain, and strict regulatory requirements can add complexity to daily tasks. These challenges are typically addressed through comprehensive safety training, adherence to industry standards, and effective communication among crew members. Emphasizing teamwork and ongoing professional development also helps pipeliners adapt to changing project demands and ensures smooth operations.

Job description

About the Company
At Torc, we have always believed that autonomous vehicle technology will transform how we travel, move freight, and do business. A leader in autonomous driving since 2007, Torc has spent over a decade commercializing our solutions with experienced partners. Now a part of the Daimler family, we are focused solely on developing software for automated trucks to transform how the world moves freight. Join us and catapult your career with the company that helped pioneer autonomous technology, and the first AV software company with the vision to partner directly with a truck manufacturer.
Meet the Team:
The Build and Tools group at Torc is responsible for the infrastructure, hosted systems, developer platform, and build pipelines for Torc products. The release pipelines team is a new team within the build and tools group responsible for building the automation systems and workflow pipelines supporting rapid and safe release of safety critical software to autonomous vehicles.
What You'll Do:
As a member of the release pipelines team, you will be responsible for the automation and pipeline work that ties individual software components and a layered embedded operating system together into a cohesive release. You will be responsible for build and packaging performance, implementation of release candidacy workflows, and establishing the digital thread that links initial requirements and safety inputs with a reproducible output ready for testing or production deployment. This will involve:
  • Build automation tooling and pipeline development
  • Complex workflow automation via Temporal
  • Bazel, BuildStream, and other high-speed build systems
  • Integration with 3rd party work tracking and requirements systems
  • Integration with custom systems and hardware testing platforms

What You'll Need to Succeed
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science or engineering equivalent & 7+ years of relevant experience.
  • 3+ years of Engineering Management Experience
  • Technical Strategy: Ability to define a roadmap for build infrastructure, focusing on pipelines for releasing complex multi-faceted software systems. Bonus points for experience in embedded software systems. Prioritization of developer velocity, system reliability, and hermeticity.
  • Domain Literacy: Strong technical background in Build/Release Engineering, including a deep understanding of the trade-offs between different build systems (Bazel vs. others) and workflow engines (Temporal).
  • Operational Oversight: Experience with AWS environments and containerized software delivery lifecycles.
  • Resource Management: Familiarity with the complexities of Debian-based software distribution and the automation required to maintain a secure supply chain.
  • Team Leadership: Proven track record of hiring and developing high-performing engineers in the space.
  • Preferred Skills: Familiarity with the hardware-software interface and the unique challenges of supporting embedded Linux and complex embedded software releases.

Perks of Being a Full-time Torc'r:
Torc cares about our team members and we strive to provide benefits and resources to support their health, work/life balance, and future. Our culture is collaborative, energetic, and team focused. Torc offers:
  • A competitive compensation package that includes a bonus component and stock options
  • 100% paid medical, dental, and vision premiums for full-time employees
  • 401K plan with a 6% employer match
  • Flexibility in schedule and generous paid vacation (available immediately after start date)
  • AD+D and Life Insurance

At Torc, we're committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace. We celebrate the uniqueness of our Torc'rs and do not discriminate based on race, religion, color, national origin, gender (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions), sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, veteran status, or disabilities.
Even if you don't meet 100% of the qualifications listed for this opportunity, we encourage you to apply.
Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several geographic markets. Pay is based on a number of factors and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Torc's total compensation package will also include our corporate bonus and stock option plan.
