Job description

Job Summary

Mechworks Mechanical Contractors is an employee-owned mechanical contractor, which means our pipefitters build ownership and equity through our Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), not just a paycheck. We are hiring Journeyman Pipefitters to install, maintain, and repair piping and valve systems on commercial and industrial sites. You will fabricate and assemble pipe for water, steam, fuel gas, refrigerant, and process systems from blueprints and specifications, using welding, brazing, soldering, threading, blueprint reading, and pipe layout. We hire and promote across three journeyman levels, so there is a clear path to grow your skills, pay, and responsibility.

Position Details

Pay range: $20 to $35 per hour, based on level, experience, and certifications.

Reports to: Trade Supervisor

Supervises: Assigned crew. Levels 1 and 2 lead their own crews; Level 3 leads all crews across assigned jobs.

Employment type: Full-time

Key Responsibilities

  • Lay out, fabricate, assemble, install, and repair piping and valve systems using hand tools, power tools, and fabricating machines.
  • Read blueprints, sketches, and specifications to plan fabrication and installation, and select pipe size and material such as steel, copper, aluminum, PVC, and fiberglass.
  • Cut, thread, bend, and form pipe, then weld, braze, solder, and bolt components to assemble systems.
  • Measure and mark layout using shop math, then install assemblies and inspect them against specifications.
  • Supervise and train assigned crew, enforce safety and company policy, and coordinate with other trades.
  • Plan work sequences and labor estimates to meet schedules, and track time with correct job and task codes.
  • Identify and resolve field problems and report site changes to the Supervisor or Project Manager.

Journeyman Levels

Level 1 (2+ years of experience)

  • Read basic blueprints and work from the Pipe Fitters Handbook.
  • Cut and thread steel, solder copper for water and air, silver braze copper for refrigerant, and install PVC.
  • Pressure test systems for leaks, size condensate drains, and install specialty items such as vent sensors and traps.
  • Draw fittings on Mechworks requisition sheets and supervise apprentices.

Level 2 (5+ years; all Level 1 skills plus)

  • 6G pipe welding certification and OSHA 10-Hour certification, serving as site safety enforcer.
  • Supervise up to six pipefitters or apprentices and plan their labor and materials.
  • Working knowledge of hydronic systems and fuel gas regulator sizing, and able to lay out fuel gas and refrigerant systems.
  • Read full project documents, generate requests for information, and coordinate with inspectors, superintendents, and other trades.

Level 3 (8+ years; all Level 2 skills plus)

  • OSHA 30-Hour certification and certified to operate forklifts and lifts.
  • Accountable for all field management on assigned projects, planning two weeks ahead.
  • Supervise up to eight pipefitters or apprentices across multiple sites.
  • Read job cost reports and support management with cost to complete.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to job sites.
  • Able to pass a background check and pre-employment drug screen.
  • Verifiable journeyman pipefitting experience (2+ years for Level 1).
  • NCCER credentials or equivalent trade training preferred.
  • 6G pipe welding certification required for Level 2 and above.

Physical Demands

Must be able to stand or walk for long periods; lift and carry 50 to 100 pounds; climb ladders and scaffolds; work while stooped, kneeling, crouched, or crawling; and see naturally or with correction to work safely.

Work Environment

Work occurs in all weather, including severe cold, extreme heat, and high winds, and may involve toxic or caustic chemicals or fumes, high noise, moving mechanical parts, heights, and cramped quarters. The role may require powder-actuated tools such as ram sets and Hilti guns. Mechworks provides the safety equipment and training required for the work.

Benefits

Mechworks invests in our people. Full-time employees are eligible for a comprehensive benefits package after meeting length-of-service requirements.

  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP): share in the company’s success as an employee-owner.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match up to 4%.
  • Medical coverage through UMR (a UnitedHealthcare company), including Teladoc telehealth, with Mechworks covering 70% of the employee premium.
  • Dental coverage through Guardian, plus company-paid vision coverage (Mechworks pays 100% of the vision premium).
  • Company-paid basic life and AD&D insurance.
  • Voluntary life and AD&D, plus short-term and long-term disability options.
  • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA).
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for confidential personal support.
  • Voluntary worksite benefits, including accident and critical illness coverage.
  • Paid Time Off (PTO): 2 weeks per year to start, increasing to 3 weeks at 5 years and 4 weeks at 10+ years of service.
  • Six paid holidays per year.
