What is the difference between Physics Startup vs Physics Research Scientist?

AspectPhysics StartupPhysics Research Scientist
Required CredentialsTypically requires a Bachelor's or Master's in Physics or related field; some roles may prefer PhDUsually requires a PhD in Physics or a closely related discipline
Work EnvironmentFast-paced, entrepreneurial, often in office or lab settings, with a focus on product development or innovationAcademic or institutional labs, research centers, with focus on experiments and theoretical work
Employer & Industry UsageStartups, tech companies, R&D firms focusing on new technologies or applicationsUniversities, government labs, research institutions

Physics startups focus on applying physics principles to develop new products or technologies in a dynamic environment, often requiring entrepreneurial skills. Physics research scientists primarily conduct experiments and theoretical research in academic or institutional settings. Both roles require strong physics backgrounds but differ in work environment and objectives.

What are some typical challenges faced when working at a physics startup, and how can I prepare for them?

Working at a physics startup often involves navigating rapid changes, limited resources, and a need for creative problem-solving. You'll likely be required to wear multiple hats, adapt quickly, and contribute outside your core area of expertise. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as teams are typically small and highly collaborative. Preparing by developing flexibility, strong project management skills, and a proactive attitude will help you thrive in this dynamic environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive at a physics startup, and why are they important?

To thrive at a physics startup, you need a strong background in physics or engineering, problem-solving abilities, and preferably an advanced degree in a relevant field. Familiarity with simulation software, lab instrumentation, and data analysis tools—as well as experience with prototyping and product development—are often essential. Initiative, adaptability, and strong collaboration skills help individuals excel in the dynamic and fast-paced environment of a startup. These skills enable innovative solutions, efficient progress, and effective teamwork, which are crucial for the success and growth of a physics-focused startup.

Is physics extremely hard?

Working in a physics startup often requires strong analytical skills and a solid understanding of fundamental physics principles, which can be challenging for some. The difficulty depends on the specific role, but typically involves problem-solving, data analysis, and sometimes advanced mathematics or programming. Persistence and continuous learning are important for success in this field.

What are the 7 major areas of physics?

The seven major areas of physics are classical mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, relativity, optics, and acoustics. These fields cover the fundamental principles governing matter, energy, and their interactions, and are essential for physics startups focused on research, development, and innovation in physical sciences.

What are the 3 laws of physics?

The three fundamental laws of physics are Newton's laws of motion, which describe how objects move and interact; the law of conservation of energy, stating energy cannot be created or destroyed; and the laws of thermodynamics, governing heat and energy transfer. These principles form the basis for understanding physical phenomena in scientific and engineering contexts, including roles in research and development at a physics startup.

What is physics a study of?

Physics is the branch of science that studies matter, energy, and the fundamental forces of nature. It involves understanding how objects move, interact, and behave at different scales, from subatomic particles to the universe. Physics often requires mathematical skills and laboratory work to develop theories and conduct experiments.

What is a physics startup?

A physics startup is a company that leverages advancements in physics to develop new technologies, products, or services. These startups often focus on innovative solutions in areas like quantum computing, advanced materials, medical devices, or energy. Physics startups typically emerge from academic research or collaborations and aim to commercialize scientific breakthroughs. They play a crucial role in bringing cutting-edge physics research to market, driving technological progress and economic growth.

Engineer/Applied Physicist

Until

Mundelein, IL

Full-time

Posted 5 days ago

Job description

Until is a moonshot company building a “pause button” for biology. Our near-term focus is organ-scale reversible cryopreservation: preserving donated organs at subzero temperatures without ice formation, then rewarming them uniformly for transplant. By solving this grand challenge, we’re laying the foundation for whole-body reversible cryopreservation, giving patients a bridge to future cures.

To achieve our goal, we are assembling an interdisciplinary team to develop perfusion systems, cryoprotectant formulations, and vitrification and rewarming hardware.

We envision a future where no transplantable organ is lost to logistics, and no terminal diagnosis is final because patients can safely wait for future medicine to arrive.

About The Role
We’re building an elite team of applied physicists and engineers for true full stack engineering, from electrons to operating systems. Projects will require high degree of autonomy and breadth of skill across electrical, mechanical, and computational design, with a strong emphasis on first principles thinking and a desire to make technology indistinguishable from magic.
About You
  • Strong fundamentals in both a scientific (physics, chemistry, biology) and an engineering (electrical, mechanical, computational) discipline, excited to build the future
  • Experience designing and analyzing both analog and digital circuitry
  • Experience with basic control systems and mechanical design
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or equivalent
  • Demonstrations of exceptional ability and autonomy in past work
Preferred Qualifications
  • 3+ years experience/graduate level in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or equivalent
  • Experience working in a startup
Benefits
  • Opportunity for outsized impact creating the future as an early team member
  • Generous medical, dental and vision insurance coverage
  • Flexible time off and paid holidays
  • Competitive compensation package, including salary and equity
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan
  • FSA and commuter benefits
  • Subsidized lunch daily
While this represents our expected range based on market data, final compensation will be determined based on your specific qualifications and may be outside this range. Please keep in mind that the equity portion of the offer is not included in this estimate.
As an equal opportunity employer, Until is committed to providing employment opportunities to all individuals. All applicants for positions at Until will be treated without regard to race, color, ethnicity, religion, sex, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, age, marital status, veteran status, pregnancy, or any other basis prohibited by applicable law.

We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans. If you would like more information about how your data is processed, please contact us.
