Job description
CAMECA, a world leader in microanalytical and metrology instrumentation, is seeking an R&D Scientist to support the design and development of next-generation Atom Probe microscopes. Reporting to the Principal Engineer, this role collaborates closely with cross-functional teams on advanced instrumentation and subsystem development.
Key Responsibilities
Instrument Performance & Testing
- Design, coordinate, and conduct subsystem and full instrument performance tests
- Quantify performance of atom probe instrumentation and report findings through internal reports and technical reviews
Simulation & Modeling
- Develop ion optical simulation tools to predict overall instrument performance
- Validate electrostatic models using existing atom probe systems and recommend enhancements for future designs
Product Development & Design Collaboration
- Collaborate with sales, marketing, applications, and engineering teams to define next-generation instruments
- Participate in cross-functional design reviews involving mechanical, optical, and electronic systems
- Work closely with electrical, software, and mechanical engineers to design, procure, and test prototype systems
Manufacturing & Process Development
- Develop processes for manufacturing proprietary components used in atom probe instruments
- Apply knowledge of advanced manufacturing methods, including heat treatment, forming, EDM, electroforming, micro-drilling, laser processing, machining, and tolerance analysis
Systems Evaluation & Technical Development
- Evaluate and enhance microchannel plate-based single particle detection systems
- Assess materials and define best practices for ultra-high vacuum (UHV) and high-voltage (HV) mechanical designs
Support & Troubleshooting
- Provide hands-on troubleshooting support to Service and Manufacturing teams, both on-site and remotely as needed
- Support production and service personnel through training, documentation, and issue resolution
Requirements
Education & Experience
- MS or PhD in Materials Science, Engineering, Physics, or a related field (required)
- 6-8 years of relevant industry experience
- Experience with simulation tools such as Lorentz or COMSOL (preferred)
Technical Knowledge
- Strong foundation in engineering, physics, and materials science principles
- Experience with ion optics, electron optics, TOF mass spectrometry, and single particle detection systems
- Experience in the design and troubleshooting of ultra-high vacuum systems
- Proven experience in complex electro-mechanical product development
- Proficiency with 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred)
- Familiarity with fabrication methods and design for manufacturability
- Experience with diagnostic and measurement equipment and data acquisition/analysis
- Experience working with high-voltage systems (+/-20kV) and in-vacuum component design
- Experience with advanced sample preparation techniques (e.g., focused ion beam, electron microscopy, PVD)
- Experience with machine shop tools (CNC mill, lathe, hand tools)
- Proficiency with lab automation tools (Python, AI code generation, National Instruments LabVIEW)
- Experience with data analysis and modeling tools (Mathematica or MATLAB preferred)
