What is physical security engineering?

Physical security engineering is the discipline focused on designing, implementing, and maintaining systems and processes that protect physical assets, facilities, and personnel from threats such as unauthorized access, theft, vandalism, and natural disasters. This field involves the integration of security technologies like surveillance cameras, access control systems, alarms, barriers, and secure facility layouts. Physical security engineers assess vulnerabilities, develop security plans, and ensure that all protective measures work together to reduce risks and ensure safety. They often collaborate with IT and cybersecurity professionals to provide comprehensive protection against both physical and digital threats.

What are some common challenges faced by Physical Security Engineers when implementing new security systems in existing facilities?

Physical Security Engineers often encounter challenges when retrofitting new security technologies into existing buildings, such as integrating modern access control systems with legacy infrastructure or addressing gaps in surveillance coverage. These projects require thorough site assessments, close coordination with facilities management, and creative problem-solving to ensure minimal disruption to daily operations. Additionally, engineers must stay current with evolving security threats and compliance standards, making adaptability and continuous learning crucial for success in this role.

We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on.

We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain - and we're looking for talented people who want to help.
You will collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. At AWS you will experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
Colo Physical Security Engineers [Architects] at AWS work with our Colocation Vendor partners to design safe, secure, resilient, cost-effective Data Center (DC) facilities. As a Colo Physical Security Engineer [Architect], you will work directly with other AWS Security Teams, AWS Management, and Colo Vendor partners to collaborate in the real-world application of Physical Security throughout AWS. You will review and be very knowledgeable of new technologies and security measures for possible application to the existing suite of security processes and standards to enhance the security posture across AWS

You should have a working knowledge of physical security principles and how that relates to practical application and real-world implementation of processes and measures, as well as working knowledge of Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED).
Key job responsibilities

Communicate conceptual designs to internal stakeholders and external stakeholders and consultants.
Participate in the maintenance of basis of design (BOD) documents, prototype design, and template specifications for Colo physical security elements.
Create security design scope of work for Colo DC project RFPs.
Review and direct the work of Colo physical security engineering design consultants.
Manage multiple fast-paced projects simultaneously.
Travel for site assessments, internal design meetings, construction review, and interfacing with design consultants. Anticipated travel not to exceed 25%.
