How much do phd electrical engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 7, 2026, the average yearly pay for phd electrical engineer in the United States is $111,091.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $83,000.00 and $132,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a PhD Electrical Engineer do?

A PhD Electrical Engineer conducts advanced research, designs, and develops electrical systems or components, often pushing the boundaries of technology. They may work in academia, leading research projects and teaching, or in industry, developing innovative solutions for complex engineering problems. Their expertise is critical in areas like communications, power systems, electronics, and signal processing. PhD-level engineers also contribute to scientific publications and may secure patents for new inventions.

What is the difference between Phd Electrical Engineer vs Electrical Engineer?

Work EnvironmentResearch labs, academia, R&D departmentsDesign, development, and testing in industry or construction
Employer & Industry UsageUniversities, research institutions, high-tech companiesManufacturers, utility companies, consulting firms

The main difference between a Phd Electrical Engineer and an Electrical Engineer lies in their education level and typical work environment. A Phd Electrical Engineer usually holds a doctoral degree and focuses on research, development, and advanced problem-solving, often in academia or R&D. In contrast, an Electrical Engineer typically has a bachelor's or master's degree and works on practical design, implementation, and maintenance in industry settings.

What are some common challenges faced by PhD Electrical Engineers when transitioning from academia to industry roles?

PhD Electrical Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to faster-paced project timelines, aligning research expertise with immediate business needs, and working within multidisciplinary teams. Unlike academic environments that may prioritize theoretical advances, industry roles usually focus on practical applications, product development, and measurable outcomes. Building strong communication skills and learning to collaborate with professionals from non-engineering backgrounds can help ease this transition and foster career growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PhD Electrical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PhD Electrical Engineer, you need advanced expertise in electrical engineering principles, research methodologies, and a doctoral degree in the field. Proficiency with simulation software (such as MATLAB or SPICE), programming languages, and laboratory equipment is commonly required, along with experience in publishing academic research. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help you excel in both collaborative and independent research environments. These abilities are crucial for driving innovation, advancing technology, and contributing valuable insights in both academic and industry settings.

Job description

We are seekingย a Senior Electrical Engineer to become an integral part of our team!ย You willย assist in theย research, design andย developmentย of electrical componentsย andย systems.ย

The Opportunity

Are you a visionary engineer who thrives in the "gray area" between a whiteboard concept and a functional product? FinishLinePDS is seeking aย Senior R&D Electrical Engineerย to lead our hardware design group.

In this role, you won't just be executing designs; you will be defining them. You will lead the transition from fundamental research to scalable, high-performance hardware.

Core Responsibilities

  • System Architecture:ย Lead the electrical design and architectural definition of complex systems, balancing power, performance, cost, and thermal constraints.
  • Full-Life Cycle Design:ย Own the process from initial schematic capture and multi-layer PCB layout to bring-up, debugging, and design validation.
  • Advanced R&D:ย Conduct feasibility studies and rapid prototyping for emerging technologies. Solve deep technical challenges in signal integrity, EMI/EMC, and power management.
  • Mentorship:ย Serve as a technical lead, guiding junior engineers and technicians through complex design reviews and troubleshooting sessions.
  • Cross-Functional Leadership:ย Work closely with Firmware, Mechanical, and Industrial Design teams to ensure seamless system integration.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Develop and install electrical components and systemsย
  • Assess and modify existing power distribution systems
  • Troubleshoot relay and data systemย designs
  • Research and document relay test results
  • Track project time lines to complete tasks on scheduleย
  • Ensure reliable operation of equipment

โ€‹

Technical Requirements

  • Expertise in PCB Design:ย Mastery of Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, or similar EDA tools for high-density, high-speed digital and analog designs.
  • Power Electronics:ย Deep experience in DC-DC converter design, battery management systems (BMS), or low-power optimization.
  • Signal Integrity:ย Proficiency in high-speed interface design (USB 3.2, PCIe, DDR4/5, or MIPI) and simulation tools like SPICE or HyperLynx.
  • Validation:ย Advanced skills with lab equipment, including MSO oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and RF spectrum analyzers.
  • Education:ย BSEE required (MSEE or PhD preferred). 8+ years of experience in an R&D or product development environment.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in electrical engineering or other related fields
  • Familiarity with electrical diagnostic equipment
  • Knowledge of relay design standards
  • Excellent root cause analysis skills
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask

The Ideal Candidate

  • You are comfortable withย ambiguityย and can pivot quickly when R&D testing reveals new data.
  • You have aย portfolioย of products that have successfully moved from the lab to high-volume manufacturing.
  • You are aย clear communicatorย who can explain complex electrical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
