SUMMARY
Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) is currently searching for Adjunct faculty to teach courses in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). This is a POOL position. Application materials for this adjunct position are accepted on an ongoing basis due to increasing demand for courses in this subject area.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
  • Prepare course syllabi addressing targeted student abilities, specific competencies, textbook requirements, grading/assessment methodology, course scheduling, and/or other items as required.
  • Conduct all class sessions according to schedule.
  • Provide instruction, activities, assignments, and assessments to cover the ESOL Program Student Learning Objectives for the specific course (s) taught.
  • Use student-centered teaching methods that emphasize application, cooperation, and collaboration and engage students actively in their studies, encouraging them to become independent learners with higher-order thinking skills.
  • Organize and explain content using methods which are appropriate to students with differing abilities, levels of preparation, and cultural experiences.
  • Assign and provide feedback for in- and out-of-class work; monitor student progress.
  • Perform adequate assessment and analysis of assessment according to college requirements.
  • Reflect on and evaluate the effectiveness of one's own pedagogy.
  • Provide regular, timely reports to students of academic performance including current grades in course(s) taught.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the program, division, and total institution by timely attendance and submission of required grade, attendance, or other miscellaneous reports to the administration.
  • Other related duties as assigned by appropriate administrator.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • College-level ESOL teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated participation in interdisciplinary teaching and learning initiatives.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development and trends, especially regarding expedited assimilation.
  • Ability to perform well in an urban community college serving a multicultural population.
  • Documented record of establishing and maintaining appropriate professional relationships.
  • Knowledge of classroom technology best practices as related to language acquisition.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and constructively with persons of various cultures, language groups, and abilities.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and ability to work with the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of college students, including those with disabilities.
  • Interest and demonstrated experience in multiple language skill areas, and multiple levels of English language proficiency.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in TESOL, Linguistics, or Applied Linguistics.
  • College-level ESOL teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated participation in interdisciplinary teaching and learning initiatives.
  • Ability to perform well in an urban community college serving a diverse population.
  • Documented record of establishing and maintaining appropriate professional relationships.
  • Knowledge of classroom technology best practices as related to language acquisition.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • PhD in TESOL, Linguistics, or Applied Linguistics.
  • Teaching experience in an open enrollment, urban community college.
  • Experience with a Learning Management System such as Blackboard.
  • Experience in learner-centered pedagogy.

WORKING CONDITIONS
In performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, talk, hear, walk, and sit. Occasionally, the employee may need to push or lift items. WORK SCHEDULE
