What is a Phage PhD?

A Phage PhD refers to a doctoral program or a person who has earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in a field involving bacteriophages, which are viruses that infect and kill bacteria. Research in this area typically focuses on understanding the biology, genetics, and therapeutic potential of phages, especially as alternatives to antibiotics. Phage PhD candidates often work in microbiology, molecular biology, or biotechnology labs, conducting experiments and publishing scientific papers. Graduates can pursue careers in academia, pharmaceuticals, research institutions, or public health organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Phage PhD, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Phage PhD, you need advanced knowledge in microbiology, molecular biology, and virology, typically demonstrated by a doctoral degree in a life sciences field. Expertise with laboratory techniques such as phage isolation, genome sequencing, and analysis software like BLAST or bioinformatics platforms is essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills set candidates apart in both research and collaborative environments. These competencies are crucial for driving innovative research, publishing findings, and contributing to advancements in bacteriophage science.

What are some common challenges faced by Phage PhD researchers when conducting laboratory experiments?

Phage PhD researchers often encounter challenges such as isolating specific bacteriophages from complex environmental samples, maintaining sterile lab conditions to prevent contamination, and optimizing protocols for phage amplification and characterization. Additionally, troubleshooting unexpected results, such as low phage yields or inconsistent host interactions, is a routine part of the work. Collaborating with microbiologists, bioinformaticians, and clinicians is also important, as phage research is highly interdisciplinary and often involves integrating lab work with computational analyses.

Job description

Principal or Senior Principal Scientist โ€“ Peptide & Bioconjugate Drug Discovery

Does it excite you to build next-generation peptide drug discovery capabilities in metabolic disease? If this sounds like you, and you are ready to take on a broad area of responsibilities, then you could be our new colleague. Zealand Pharma is significantly expanding its global R&D capabilities and is establishing new research units in Cambridge, Massachusetts. We are creating a new organizationโ€”Molecular Platform Developmentโ€”to strengthen and advance diverse drug modality capabilities in metabolic disease. We are seeking a Principal or Senior Principal Scientist โ€“ Peptide & Bioconjugate Drug Discovery to take a leading scientific role in building peptide- and bioconjugate-based discovery capabilities within this new organization. The position offers a unique opportunity to shape strategy, culture, and technical excellence from the ground up, while directly influencing Zealand Pharmaโ€™s longโ€‘term ambitions to deliver transformative medicines for people living with metabolic diseases.

Responsibilities
  • Define and lead peptide and bioconjugate drug discovery strategy aligned with Zealand Pharmaโ€™s metabolic disease portfolio and longโ€‘term business objectives.
  • Drive peptide and bioconjugate discovery programs from concept through leadโ€‘candidate selection, partnering closely with crossโ€‘functional stakeholders in computational chemistry, protein engineering, biology, pharmaceutical development, and project stakeholders.
  • Provide deep peptide and bioconjugate expertise across multiple modality formats and lead structureโ€“activity relationship development and optimization.
  • Guide lead and backup candidate selection using integrated chemical, biological, and manufacturability considerations.
  • Establish and grow peptide and bioconjugate chemistry and discovery platform capabilities at the Cambridge R&D center, including automationโ€‘enabled highโ€‘throughput synthesis, purification, and analytics.
  • Build a highโ€‘performing, collaborative environment through mentorship, recruiting support, and crossโ€‘functional/external partnerships (including academic, biotech, and CRO collaborations).
Qualifications
  • PhD in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Chemical Biology, or a related field (postdoctoral training preferred).
  • 6+ years of relevant postโ€‘degree experience in peptide drug discovery (Principal) or 8+ years (Senior Principal).
  • Demonstrated track record progressing programs from concept toward clinical development, evidenced by inventorship on patents and peerโ€‘reviewed publications.
  • Deep expertise in peptide design, solidโ€‘phase peptide synthesis, and bioconjugation, with significant experience harnessing diverse highโ€‘throughput molecular discovery tools from hitโ€‘finding to leadโ€‘candidate optimization.
  • Experience establishing highโ€‘throughput/parallel workflows, including parallel and combinatorial synthesis, automated massโ€‘directed purification, and automated analytical characterization.
  • Ability to interpret and apply computational modeling and design insights, and familiarity with highโ€‘throughput hitโ€‘finding/optimization approaches (e.g., mRNA display, phage display, and/or DNAโ€‘encoded library technologies).
Your New Team

This position is within Discovery Research: Molecular Platform Development, a new organization being established as part of Zealand Pharmaโ€™s expanding R&D capabilities. The role reports to the Head of Molecular Platform Development and partners closely with computational research, protein sciences, biology, translational research, pharmacology, bioanalysis, and CMC colleagues to accelerate discovery and deliver highโ€‘quality peptideโ€‘ and bioconjugateโ€‘based candidates.

Compensation

Anticipated base pay range: $220,000 โ€“ $270,000
