What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during a PFAS Internship?

As a PFAS intern, you'll typically assist with environmental sampling, laboratory analysis, and data interpretation related to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). You may support fieldwork by collecting soil, water, or air samples, and help prepare reports documenting findings for regulatory compliance or remediation efforts. Collaboration with environmental engineers, chemists, and project managers is common, providing valuable exposure to multidisciplinary teamwork and real-world problem solving. This hands-on experience is an excellent foundation for a career in environmental science or engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PFAS Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PFAS Intern, you generally need a background in environmental science or chemistry, with coursework or experience related to contaminants and laboratory analysis. Familiarity with analytical instruments like LC-MS/MS, data analysis software, and relevant environmental regulations is often required. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for collaborating with researchers and conveying findings. These abilities ensure accurate data collection, regulatory compliance, and meaningful contributions to PFAS research and remediation projects.

What is a PFAS internship?

A PFAS internship is a temporary, educational position focused on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a group of man-made chemicals found in the environment and various products. Interns in this field typically assist with research, data analysis, laboratory testing, and policy development related to PFAS contamination and remediation. These internships provide valuable hands-on experience in environmental science, public health, or chemical engineering, and expose students to real-world challenges involving emerging contaminants. They are often offered by government agencies, environmental organizations, and research institutions.
