Job description

Position Description: Veterinary Technician in Training

Role Overview:

As a Vet Tech in Training, you'll play a key role in supporting our foster families and ensuring the health and well-being of kittens in our care. Many of our kittens are fostered by their "finder" until they are old enough for sterilization (around 2.5 lbs. or 12 weeks). These fosters are often new to kitten care, so each foster family is paired with a "field technician" who makes house calls to assess and care for the kittens.

Key Responsibilities:

  • House Calls: Visit foster homes to perform health checks on kittens, monitor progress, and provide necessary care.
  • Health Assessments: Obtain accurate weights, perform physical examinations, and determine which vaccinations, treatments, or medical interventions are due.
  • Medical Procedures:
    • Administer vaccinations and medications.
    • Calculate correct dosages.
    • Perform routine procedures such as claw trimming.
  • Training and Mentorship: Work alongside an experienced veterinary technician until you're confident in the procedures and responsibilities.
  • Communication:
    • Document findings and share photos of any anomalies with the program coordinator or other field technicians.
    • Provide feedback and guidance to foster families regarding kitten care.

What We Provide:

  • Comprehensive training and support, including working closely with experienced field technicians.
  • All medical supplies and tools necessary for exams and treatments.
  • Ongoing guidance to ensure you're equipped and confident in this role.

What You'll Gain:

  • Practical veterinary experience in kitten care and health management.
  • Confidence in performing medical tasks like giving injections and administering medications.
  • An opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of vulnerable kittens and their foster families.

Requirements:

  • A love for animals and a commitment to their care.
  • Willingness to learn and follow medical protocols.
  • Reliability, attention to detail, and good communication skills.
  • Ability to travel to foster homes for in-person visits.

This is a volunteer role where you’ll gain hands-on experience in veterinary care while making a lasting impact on the kittens in our program!
