Job description

Position Summary 

Single or multi-departmental management of operations. Manages day-to-day operations. Directs, supervises, orients/trains and evaluates staff. Enforces policies, procedures and standards of operation. Position has budgetary or fiscal accountability. Maintains and oversees daily operation of unit. Renders and mentors individualized, age appropriate patient care. Position is responsible for approving timekeeping, meeting applicable regulatory standards, approving supply orders and department strategic planning.

  • Minimum Requirements
    • Education: Completion of formal two-year respiratory education program, which meets requirements for certification (CRT) and registration (RRT).
    • Experience: Three years of respiratory experience.
    • Licensure/Certifications: Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner in the State of Arizona, CPR. As required by facility: ACLS, PALS and NRP required within 12 months of employment.
  • Preferred Requirements

    • Experience: Management experience and two years supervisory experience preferred

  • Patient Care: Administers all modes of respiratory care modalities according to the hospital P&P. Completes/documents patient care assessment and response to therapy. Performs routine maintenance, and safety biomed checks according to manufacturers and departmental procedures. Implement respiratory and medical orders and assures they are appropriate to the patient's current status. Assists physicians with special tests and procedures. Assists and reports CQI monitors and audits for CAP survey. Provides emotional support and appropriate teaching to patient and families. Recognizes early and subtle changes in patient condition and intervenes to prevent further deterioration of patient status. Initiates life support measures and performs effectively during emergency/crisis situations. Acts as liaison between physicians, staff, patients, family members, administration and other departments.
  • Management: Delegates unit tasks. Resolves team conflict Applies team-building skills and develops self-directed teams. Assists in new employee orientation teaching customer service goals, efficiency, and accountability and conflict resolution. Identifies poor and positive performance and acts as first line coach providing feedback and counseling. Keeps staff informed by frequent communication of policy changes, organizational goals, customer service issues, and department performance issues. Participates in development of budgets that reflect appropriate expenditures for personnel, supplies, and equipment. Assists in taking action to correct variances. Assists in maintaining productivity guidelines. Assists case managers in discharge planning (from a resource consumption perspective) with respiratory therapy.
    Provides a mechanism for cost effective ordering and organizing supplies, tracking and storing equipment and keeping department clean and orderly. Assists in continuous survey readiness in compliance with regulatory agencies. Assists staff in developing solutions and supports. Interprets and implements organizational goals. Assists in developing standards of care consistent with local and national standards Identifies and prioritizes what needs to be done in terms of patient care and department tasks. Estimates patient workloads and ensures staffing reflects workloads. Participates in interviews and staff selection and matches clinical skills, flexibility and personality to unit needs. Assists in setting performance and behavior standards and in evaluating performance. Completes department staffing for 24-hour period including weekdays, weekends, and holidays. Provides data, information and reports in a timely manner. Assists with long-term staff plans. Completes work schedules and posts in timely manner.
  • Problem Solving: Identifies, proposes solutions, and assists in implementation of ideas for improvements in patient care and department/hospital operations. Participates in the successful implementation of changes. Identifies and takes steps to eliminate unnecessary patient interventions and diagnostic studies. Identifies opportunities and implements strategies to decrease waste in supplies, equipment and linen use. Assists staff in identifying patient problems and making good patient care decisions. Directs staff in maintaining a safe environment and customer satisfaction when staffing or resources need to be stretched. Analyzes a complex problem or project and is able to identify the consequences of various solutions. Participates in hospital wide process improvement activities
