Description
The Department of Public Safety at Jackson State University is accepting applications for its Sergeant position.
Examples of Duties
  • The Patrol Sergeant is responsible for providing leadership for subordinate personnel on the shift.
  • The Patrol Sergeant is responsible for ensuring the compliance of policies and procedures by designated personnel; assist in directing and evaluating job performance of subordinate personnel and maintaining documentation of performance appraisals; reviewing and approving incident reports of subordinate personnel; protection of life and property through enforcement of state laws and University policies and procedures; the assignment inspection and proper care of all equipment assigned to subordinate personnel.
  • The Patrol Sergeant is responsible for all ditties assigned by the Lieutenant, Captain and above.

  • The Patrol Sergeant is responsible for the shift in the absence of the Lieutenant.

  • The Patrol Sergeant may be required to work outside of their regular shift assignments when needed and perform other duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.

  • Other duties assigned.

Typical Qualifications
  • Applicant must have High School Diploma and at least 60 hours of college.
  • Applicant must have current police certification from the State of Mississippi Board on Law Enforcement Office Standards and Training (BLEOST).
  • Applicant must have at least three years of law enforcement experience.

  • Applicant must display the ability to work with all officers and the ability to deal objectively with supervisors and subordinate personnel.

  • Applicant must not have any serious disciplinary actions on file.

  • In lieu of supervisory experience, a college degree from an accredited college or university is accepted.
