What does a personal training manager do?

A Personal Training Manager oversees the personal training department within a gym or fitness center. Their main responsibilities include hiring and supervising personal trainers, developing training programs, ensuring client satisfaction, and meeting business targets such as sales and client retention. They also handle administrative tasks, provide ongoing education and support for trainers, and often interact with clients to maintain high service standards. Ultimately, they ensure both trainers and clients have a positive and productive experience.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a personal training manager?

To thrive as a Personal Training Manager, you need a strong background in exercise science, fitness training, and team leadership, often supported by a relevant degree and personal trainer certification. Familiarity with gym management software, fitness assessment tools, and scheduling systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, motivational, and organizational skills help you inspire trainers and clients while managing daily operations. These abilities ensure effective team performance, client satisfaction, and the achievement of business goals in a competitive fitness environment.

How does a personal training manager balance administrative duties with hands-on coaching responsibilities?

Personal Training Managers often split their time between overseeing the gym’s personal training operations—such as scheduling, staff development, and client management—and actively working with clients or mentoring trainers on the floor. This balance can vary depending on the size of the facility, but strong organizational skills and effective delegation are key. Managers are expected to lead by example, maintain high standards for client service, and ensure trainers are meeting their goals, which means blending administrative oversight with a visible, supportive presence in the training area.

About Crunch
Crunch is a gym that believes in making serious exercise fun by fusing fitness and entertainment and pioneering an all-inclusive, No Judgments culture. As one of the fastest-growing stories in the fitness industry, we are looking for a driven, sales-minded leader who puts coaching over telling and people over processes to expand our personal training footprint.
Position Summary
The Regional Personal Training Manager (RPTM) directly oversees the personal training operations, financial metrics, and talent development across a dedicated district of up to 5 clubs. In this role, you bypass club-level PT middle management to work directly with the Club Manager of each location and lead the Personal Trainers on the floor.
You will partner hand-in-hand with each Club Manager to drive PT revenue, maximize client retention, and build a high-performing culture. Your primary focus is running the department regionally by personally mentoring, training, and holding the personal training staff accountable to high standards of execution.
Key Responsibilities
  • Direct Trainer Leadership & Onboarding: Oversee the recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and continuous skill development of all Personal Trainers within your district.
  • Club Manager Partnership: Partner closely with each location's Club Manager to align PT sales goals with overall gym operations, ensuring the front desk and fitness teams work seamlessly together.
  • Sales Strategy & Floor Execution: Drive personal training revenue and new member training unit conversion rates by spending time on the gym floor-coaching trainers on client acquisition, lead generation, and high-impact assessment strategies.
  • Performance Coaching: Consistently monitor individual trainer metrics, KPI goals, and client retention numbers. Work directly with trainers to build actionable performance plans and step in immediately to address underperformance.
  • Operational Integrity & Compliance: Audit day-to-day functions of the personal training teams. Ensure all programs utilize proper tracking systems (session package tracking, renewal pipelines, and lead flow management).
  • Quality & Environment Control: Foster an engaging, safe, productive, and inviting workout environment. Verify that all club trainers maintain current, nationally accredited certifications and follow strict company health and safety protocols.

Candidate Profile & Requirements
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of proven management or leadership experience within a "big-box" gym or high-volume multi-unit fitness environment. Direct experience coaching individual trainers and driving personal training sales is required.
  • Business Acumen: Strong ability to read the numbers, analyze financial results, and partner effectively with Club Managers to pull the right operational levers to maximize profitability.
  • Hands-On Leadership: A proven history of motivating, influencing, and developing frontline staff. You thrive on being on the fitness floor, building authentic relationships, and teaching trainers how to build a sustainable business.
  • Education & Credentials:
    • High School Diploma or GED required (Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science or related field preferred).
    • Current, nationally recognized Personal Training Certification (e.g., NASM, ACE, NSCA, ACSM).
    • Valid CPR/AED Certification.

What We Offer
  • Uncapped Earning Potential: Highly competitive base salary enhanced by a lucrative performance commission structure and quarterly KPI bonuses.
  • Comprehensive Benefits: ICHRA Health Care Reimbursement
  • Work-Life Balance: Generous Paid Time Off (PTO), 401(k) matching programs, and flexible scheduling.
  • Perks: Free Premium Crunch Fitness Executive Membership, employee discounts on retail and services, and continuous corporate leadership development opportunities.

Compensation: $80,000.00 - $125,000.00 per year
