Permanent Wireless Sensor Network information

What is a permanent wireless sensor network?

A Permanent Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is a system of spatially distributed sensors that continuously monitor and collect data about environmental or physical conditions, such as temperature, humidity, or movement, and transmit this data wirelessly to a central system for analysis. Unlike temporary or mobile sensor networks, permanent WSNs are designed to be installed for long-term, ongoing operation in a fixed location. These networks are widely used in applications like industrial monitoring, building automation, environmental tracking, and security. Maintenance and network reliability are key considerations, as the sensors need to operate autonomously and communicate efficiently over extended periods.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a wireless sensor network engineer?

To thrive as a Wireless Sensor Network Engineer, you need a solid understanding of networking fundamentals, embedded systems, and sensor technologies, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with wireless communication protocols (such as Zigbee, LoRa, or Bluetooth), network simulation tools, and hands-on experience with sensor node programming are essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies enable the design, deployment, and maintenance of reliable sensor networks, which are vital for real-time data collection and decision-making in critical applications.

What are some common challenges faced when working on permanent wireless sensor network projects, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals working on permanent wireless sensor network (WSN) projects often encounter challenges such as ensuring reliable connectivity in varying environments, maintaining long-term sensor performance, and managing power consumption for continuous operation. Addressing these issues typically involves careful network planning, choosing robust hardware suited for the deployment environment, and optimizing communication protocols to extend battery life. Collaborating closely with interdisciplinary teams—such as hardware engineers, data analysts, and IT specialists—can also help proactively identify and solve integration or maintenance challenges, ensuring the network remains both functional and scalable over time.

What is the difference between Permanent Wireless Sensor Network vs Wireless Sensor Network Technician?

AspectPermanent Wireless Sensor NetworkWireless Sensor Network Technician
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering or computer science, with certifications in network or sensor systemsOften requires technical certifications or associate degrees in networking or electronics
Work EnvironmentDesign, deployment, and maintenance of long-term sensor networks in industrial, environmental, or infrastructure settingsInstallation, troubleshooting, and repair of sensor networks in field or lab environments
Industry UsageUsed by industries for continuous monitoring and data collection over extended periodsUsed for on-site sensor setup, diagnostics, and maintenance tasks

The main difference is that Permanent Wireless Sensor Network roles focus on designing and maintaining long-term sensor systems, while Wireless Sensor Network Technicians handle installation and troubleshooting tasks. Both roles require technical skills, but the scope and responsibilities differ based on project duration and complexity.

Anduril Industries is a defense technology company with a mission to transform U.S. and allied military capabilities with advanced technology. By bringing the expertise, technology, and business model of the 21st century's most innovative companies to the defense industry, Anduril is changing how military systems are designed, built and sold. Anduril's family of systems is powered by Lattice OS, an AI-powered operating system that turns thousands of data streams into a realtime, 3D command and control center. As the world enters an era of strategic competition, Anduril is committed to bringing cutting-edge autonomy, AI, computer vision, sensor fusion, and networking technology to the military in months, not years. ABOUT THE JOB We are looking for a highly motivated Network Engineer to join the Anduril Industries Network Team with a focus on factory systems and operational technology (OT) infrastructure.
In this role, you will design, deploy, and maintain the network systems that support Anduril's manufacturing environments. You will work directly within production spaces and partner with Manufacturing Engineering, Facilities, Security, and IT teams to ensure that all factory networks are reliable, secure, and aligned with ISA-95 and Purdue Model standards.
This role is highly hands-on. You will regularly conduct site walks, site surveys, and hardware installation at Anduril facilities. You will also participate in inventory management, procurement planning, and coordination of hardware for factory deployments. The ideal candidate combines strong networking expertise with practical field experience in industrial, air gapped, or manufacturing environments. WHAT YOU WILL DO * Perform detailed site walks and site surveys to assess network needs, validate capacity, and plan installations in manufacturing spaces * Design and implement secure, segmented network architectures for factory and OT systems based on ISA-95 and Purdue Model principles * Install, configure, and support routers, switches, firewalls, wireless infrastructure, and industrial networking devices * Support manufacturing buildouts including new production lines, machine onboarding, and integration of control systems * Conduct hands-on cabling validation, equipment racking, hardware placement, and physical layer troubleshooting * Manage network equipment inventory across facilities including tracking, forecasting, and ordering hardware * Handle procurement activities for networking components and coordinate with vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors * Maintain accurate documentation for network topology, cabling, VLAN and IP assignments, and inter-zone communication flows * Implement and manage network security controls including segmentation, ACLs, firewalls, and intrusion detection or prevention * Monitor network performance and perform proactive maintenance to ensure stability of production and automation systems * Provide on-call support and escalation assistance for production and OT network incidents * Travel to remote facilities for surveys, installations, and infrastructure upgrades REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS * 5 to 7 years of Enterprise or OT network engineering experience with the ability to lead deployments with minimal guidance * Hands-on experience performing site surveys, field installations, and factory or industrial network buildouts * Familiarity with ISA-95 and Purdue Model segmentation for operational technology environments * Proficiency with Cisco, Arista, and Palo Alto platforms including Panorama and NGFW * Experience with Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking, wireless systems, and firewall policy management * Understanding of industrial protocols such as Modbus/TCP, Ethernet IP, and PROFINET with awareness of how to secure them * Experience with datacenter or private cloud networking such as EVPN VXLAN * Strong communication, documentation, and troubleshooting skills * Ability to lift 50 pounds and work in production or construction environments as needed * Ability to travel to remote sites for installation and support * Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. TS clearance PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Experience with industrial networking platforms such as Rockwell Stratix, Hirschmann, or Moxa * Experience in environments that blend IT and OT security practices * Familiarity with Arista or Aruba hardware * Experience with AWS, Azure, GCP, or OCI * Experience with Python, Nornir, Jinja, Ansible, or Terraform for automation * Background supporting rapid-growth factory or manufacturing operations US Salary Range $120,000 - $170,000 USD The salary range for this role is an estimate based on a wide range of compensation factors, inclusive of base salary only.
