What is a permanent front end developer at a startup?

A Permanent Front End Developer at a startup is a full-time employee responsible for building and maintaining the user-facing parts of a company's web or mobile applications. This role focuses on designing and implementing user interfaces using technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React, Vue, or Angular). At a startup, front end developers often wear many hats, collaborating closely with designers, back end developers, and product teams to rapidly prototype and iterate on features. The 'permanent' aspect means the position is intended to be long-term, providing stability compared to contract or freelance roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a permanent front end developer at a startup?

To thrive as a Permanent Front End Developer at a startup, you need strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern frameworks like React or Vue, typically backed by a degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), build tools (such as Webpack), and responsive design techniques is essential, and certifications in web development can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and excellent communication skills help you excel in the fast-paced, collaborative startup environment. These skills ensure you can deliver high-quality, scalable user interfaces and quickly respond to changing project needs.

What are some common challenges faced by front end developers in a startup environment, and how can they be addressed?

Front End Developers in startups often encounter rapidly changing project requirements and tight deadlines, which can make prioritizing tasks challenging. Working in a smaller team typically means taking on a broad range of responsibilities, from UI/UX design to optimizing performance and collaborating closely with backend developers. To succeed, it's important to maintain clear communication, embrace flexibility, and prioritize learning new tools or frameworks as needed. Leveraging agile methodologies and participating in frequent team check-ins can help manage shifting priorities and ensure alignment on project goals.

Job description

ARNE is a UK-based apparel and footwear brand based in Birchwood Park, near Warrington. We design and develop all our products in the UK, working with trusted manufacturing partners across both the near and far east.

All our products are available directly to customers through ARNEclo.com, offering a seamless online shopping experience. We’re also proud to be stocked in Selfridges, both in-store and online, and we’ve recently opened our first permanent retail store at Liverpool ONE – a huge milestone for the brand.

Looking ahead, we have ambitious goals for the next decade, and the team firmly believes they’re all achievable. From launching new product categories and expanding internationally to investing in paid media, CRM, and growing our retail presence — the next chapter for ARNE is shaping up to be an exciting one. And this is only the beginning!

We’ve come a long way from starting out in Mum’s bungalow back in 2018 to our all-new, fully bespoke HQ. This space will be our home for at least the next 5–10 years, and while it’s not quite our style to shout too loudly, it’s here that we plan to reach our goals, take ARNE global, and further establish ourselves as a truly iconic UK brand.

We are looking for a Front-End Developer to join ARNE and help shape the digital experience for our customers. You'll be responsible for building and optimising customer-facing features across our website and app, with a focus on driving conversion, improving user experience and supporting our ambitious growth plans.

Your day-to-day role and responsibilities include:
  • Build, maintain and optimise front end features across our Shopify Plus storefront
  • Translate UX/UI designs into clean, performant, accessible code
  • Work closely with our UX Designer, Product Lead and Ecommerce Manager to ship new features and improvements
  • Support A/B testing and CRO initiatives with fast, reliable implementation
  • Ensure site performance, accessibility (WCAG) and cross-browser/device compatibility
  • Troubleshoot and resolve front end bugs and issues
  • Collaborate with our dev agency on larger scope work, picking up handover where needed
  • Contribute to platform strategy discussions (e.g. theme development, headless considerations)
  • Strong experience with HTML, CSS/SCSS and JavaScript, with the ability to build high-quality, performant user experiences.
  • Proven experience working with Shopify, including Liquid and theme development. Experience with Shopify Plus is highly advantageous.
  • Previous experience within fashion, retail or ecommerce environments would be beneficial, but is not essential.
  • Solid understanding of responsive design principles and mobile-first development best practices.
  • Experience using Git and working within modern development workflows and collaborative environments.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, with a passion for delivering pixel-perfect experiences that maintain the integrity of the ARNE brand.
  • Comfortable collaborating closely with designers, ecommerce teams and non-technical stakeholders to bring ideas to life and continuously improve the customer experience.
  • A proactive problem solver who takes ownership of work and is always looking for opportunities to optimise performance, usability and conversion.
  • We are proud to be recognised as a Medium sized Sunday Times Best Place to Work two years a row!
  • 32 Days Holiday (including Bank Holidays) + your Birthday off
  • Holidays increasing up to 36 days with service
  • Option to buy / sell holidays
  • Generous staff discount
  • Annual and quarterly bonus schemes based on company performance
  • Private Healthcare including Dental & Optical Plans after probation
  • Health Cash Plan from day one
  • Life assurance paying 5x annual salary from day one
  • Discounted marketplace with money off/cash back from 100’s of places
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Cycle to Work Scheme
  • Tech Scheme

ARNE are an equal opportunities employer. We believe that diverse people bring different skills and are committed to ensuring our business support the needs of potential colleagues from Ethnic Minority backgrounds and colleagues who may be disabled or neurodiverse. We are committed creating a great place to work through diversity and inclusivity and we strongly encourage applications from candidates from all backgrounds to join our growing team.
