What is a perioperative nurse?

As a perioperative nurse, you work as part of a surgical operating team. Your job duties include preparing patients for procedures, assisting the operating team, and managing all nursing responsibilities in the operating room. Most perioperative nurses work in clinics, hospitals, private practices, or surgical units. You must be a registered nurse with specific experience working in high-stress environments such as an emergency room or critical care unit. Many perioperative nurses are required to be on call. You likely work on nights, weekends, and holidays, especially early in your career.

What are some typical challenges perioperative nurses face during surgical procedures, and how can new hires prepare for them?

Perioperative nurses often encounter fast-paced environments where quick decision-making and adaptability are crucial, especially when unexpected changes occur during surgery. New hires may find it challenging to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, including maintaining sterile fields, communicating clearly with the surgical team, and monitoring patient safety. To prepare, it is helpful to develop strong organizational skills, seek mentorship from experienced colleagues, and participate in simulation training to build confidence and competence in handling high-pressure situations.
