Perio Office information

What does a periodontal office do?

A periodontal office specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of gum disease and supporting structures of the teeth. The team, including periodontists and dental hygienists, performs procedures such as deep cleanings, gum surgeries, and implant placements, often using specialized tools and techniques. The environment requires knowledge of oral health, infection control, and patient care protocols.

How does a typical day in a periodontal office differ from other dental practices?

In a periodontal office, the daily routine focuses on specialized care for gum disease and dental implants, which means you'll often assist with advanced procedures like scaling and root planing, periodontal surgeries, and maintenance appointments. Team members collaborate closely, working alongside periodontists, dental hygienists, and assistants to provide patient education and manage complex treatment plans. The pace can be fast, especially when handling surgical cases, and strong communication is key to ensuring smooth patient experiences. This environment offers opportunities to develop expertise in periodontics and advance within a specialized dental team.

What is the highest paid dental job?

In the dental field, oral and maxillofacial surgeons are typically the highest paid professionals, often earning six-figure salaries due to their specialized surgical skills and extensive training. They perform complex procedures such as wisdom tooth removal, facial reconstructions, and dental implants, often requiring a surgical residency and board certification.

Why are dental hygienists leaving the field?

Dental hygienists often leave the field due to factors such as high stress levels, physical strain from repetitive motions, limited career advancement opportunities, and burnout. Additionally, workload, scheduling demands, and compensation concerns can contribute to job dissatisfaction and turnover in the profession.

What is the difference between Perio Office vs Dental Assistant?

AspectPerio OfficeDental Assistant
CredentialsTypically requires dental assisting certification, possibly specialized in periodonticsRequires dental assisting certification or diploma
Work EnvironmentSpecialized periodontal practice, focused on gum healthGeneral dental office, assisting with various procedures
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in periodontal clinics or practicesCommon in general dental practices
Job ResponsibilitiesAssisting with periodontal procedures, patient prep, sterilizationAssisting with a variety of dental procedures, patient care, sterilization

While both roles support dental practices, a Perio Office staff member specializes in periodontal care, often requiring specific certifications and working in periodontal clinics. A Dental Assistant has a broader role across general dental practices, assisting with various procedures and patient care.

What does a Perio assistant do?

A Perio assistant supports periodontists by preparing treatment rooms, sterilizing instruments, and assisting during procedures such as cleanings and surgeries. They also manage patient records, provide patient education, and ensure infection control protocols are followed. Strong communication skills and knowledge of dental tools are essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a periodontal (perio) office, and why are they important?

Working in a perio office requires knowledge of dental procedures, infection control protocols, and dental terminology, often supported by dental assistant or hygienist certification. Familiarity with digital radiography, dental charting software, and sterilization systems is typically necessary. Strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to reassure patients set top performers apart in this environment. These skills ensure patient safety, efficient workflow, and a positive patient experience in a specialized dental setting.

What is a Perio Office?

A Perio Office, short for periodontal office, is a dental practice that specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease and the placement of dental implants. Staffed by periodontists and dental professionals, these offices provide services such as deep cleanings, gum grafts, bone grafts, and maintenance for patients with gum problems. They also focus on educating patients about oral hygiene to prevent and manage periodontal disease. Periodontists in these offices work closely with general dentists to ensure comprehensive oral care.

Job description

Benefits:
  • Competitive salary
  • Employee discounts
  • Flexible schedule
  • Opportunity for advancement
  • Training & development

At Pennsylvania Perio & Implants, we are expanding our hygiene days, and looking for a Dental Hygienist to join our growing private specialty practice in Hanover, PA.
We know that not every excellent candidate is looking for the same schedule, so we are intentionally keeping this opportunity flexible. We are open to someone who would like to work as little as one day per month, as well as someone interested in a consistent weekly schedule. More than anything, we are looking for the right fit for our patients, our team, and the long-term direction of the practice.
We are a private, fee-for-service, periodontal and implant specialty office that works hard to create an environment that feels supportive, respectful, professional, and team-oriented. We value people who are dependable, kind to patients, and take pride in doing things well.
This position is based solely in our Hanover location. Our office typically has multiple assistants available to help support clinical flow whenever needed, creating a collaborative environment for the hygienist. We are looking for someone who is comfortable working with a digital EMR and digital X-rays, and who enjoys delivering thoughtful, high-quality care in a specialty setting.
One of the things that makes this role unique is the pace of care. Appointments are generally scheduled with flexibility, typically ranging from 60 to 90 minutes depending on the patients needs, allowing for a more thoughtful, patient-centered experience.
If you would like to learn more about our doctor, practice philosophy, and office culture, we encourage you to visit our website before applying. https://pennsylvaniaperioandimplants.com/

  • Provide dental hygiene care in a periodontal specialty setting

  • Maintain accurate clinical records and documentation in the EMR
  • Work closely with the doctor, assistants, and front office team

About the Owner

As a new practice owner, I am fostering an environment that feels collaborative, respectful, and supportive. In addition to my clinical training as a periodontist, I was a registered dental hygienist, which has given me a deep appreciation for the important role hygiene plays in long-term patient care. I want our hygienists to feel heard, valued, and genuinely supported not micromanaged. I welcome ideas, am open to shaping schedules, and want to help each team member grow in the direction that is most meaningful to them, whether that is periodontal maintenance, greater perio involvement, implant-related care, or patient education. Most of all, I believe in creating enough time (longer patient visits) for thoughtful care, strong patient relationships, and a positive workplace culture where people enjoy coming to work. https://pennsylvaniaperioandimplants.com/meet-the-doctor/dr-dennis-sourvanos/
