Perio Office information

How does a typical day in a periodontal office differ from other dental practices?

In a periodontal office, the daily routine focuses on specialized care for gum disease and dental implants, which means you'll often assist with advanced procedures like scaling and root planing, periodontal surgeries, and maintenance appointments. Team members collaborate closely, working alongside periodontists, dental hygienists, and assistants to provide patient education and manage complex treatment plans. The pace can be fast, especially when handling surgical cases, and strong communication is key to ensuring smooth patient experiences. This environment offers opportunities to develop expertise in periodontics and advance within a specialized dental team.

What is the difference between Perio Office vs Dental Assistant?

AspectPerio OfficeDental Assistant

While both roles support dental practices, a Perio Office staff member specializes in periodontal care, often requiring specific certifications and working in periodontal clinics. A Dental Assistant has a broader role across general dental practices, assisting with various procedures and patient care.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a periodontal (perio) office, and why are they important?

Working in a perio office requires knowledge of dental procedures, infection control protocols, and dental terminology, often supported by dental assistant or hygienist certification. Familiarity with digital radiography, dental charting software, and sterilization systems is typically necessary. Strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to reassure patients set top performers apart in this environment. These skills ensure patient safety, efficient workflow, and a positive patient experience in a specialized dental setting.

What is a Perio Office?

A Perio Office, short for periodontal office, is a dental practice that specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease and the placement of dental implants. Staffed by periodontists and dental professionals, these offices provide services such as deep cleanings, gum grafts, bone grafts, and maintenance for patients with gum problems. They also focus on educating patients about oral hygiene to prevent and manage periodontal disease. Periodontists in these offices work closely with general dentists to ensure comprehensive oral care.
