What is gentle dentistry?

Gentle dentistry refers to dental care practices that prioritize patient comfort and minimize pain or anxiety during dental procedures. Dentists who practice gentle dentistry use techniques such as local anesthesia, sedation, and calming communication to help patients feel at ease. The focus is on creating a positive and stress-free environment, especially for those who may have dental fears or sensitivities. This approach can make dental visits more pleasant and encourages regular oral health care.

What are some common challenges faced by dentists practicing gentle dentistry, and how can they be addressed?

Dentists specializing in gentle dentistry often encounter patients with high levels of dental anxiety or previous negative experiences. Addressing these challenges requires strong communication skills, patience, and the use of calming techniques such as explaining procedures clearly, offering sedation options, and creating a welcoming environment. Collaboration with dental assistants and hygienists is key to ensuring patients feel supported throughout their visit. Continuous professional development in pain management and anxiety reduction strategies can further enhance the patient experience and build trust.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a gentle dentist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a gentle dentist, you need a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree, state licensure, and strong clinical skills in preventive and restorative dental care. Familiarity with digital radiography, dental practice management software, and infection control protocols is essential. Exceptional patient communication, empathy, and a calm demeanor help create a comfortable environment for anxious patients. These skills ensure high-quality dental care while minimizing patient discomfort and building lasting trust.

Job description

As Westchester Gentle Dentistry continues to grow, we're looking for an additional compassionate and motivated Registered Dental Hygienist to join our team in Port Chester, NY.

For nearly 30 years, we have proudly served patients and families throughout Westchester County and surrounding communities. Our philosophy is simple: gentle-first, anxiety-friendly, patient-centered dental care.

We believe great dentistry starts with trust. We want every patient to feel comfortable, confident, heard, and supported—and we're looking for a hygienist who shares that philosophy.

Why You'll Love Working at WGD:
We don't believe in rushed hygiene.

Our hygienists are trusted clinical professionals, and we give them the time and autonomy they need to provide excellent, personalized patient care:
  • Clinical autonomy within a supportive, collaborative team.
  • Modern, state-of-the-art dental technology.
  • Strong focus on preventive and periodontal care.
  • Patient-centered approach emphasizing education and long-term oral health.
  • Comfortable, welcoming environment for patients with dental anxiety.
  • Opportunity to grow with an established, community-focused dental practice.

At WGD, our goal isn't simply to get patients through the schedule. We want to build lifelong relationships and provide a comfortable dental experience without compromising the quality of care.

What You'll Do:
As a Registered Dental Hygienist at WGD, you'll play an important role in our patients' overall experience and long-term oral health.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Providing comprehensive preventive and periodontal hygiene care.
  • Performing prophylaxis, periodontal maintenance, scaling and root planing, and fluoride treatments.
  • Taking digital X-rays and other necessary diagnostic records.
  • Completing periodontal charting and documenting dental and periodontal conditions.
  • Reviewing patients' medical and dental histories.
  • Educating patients about oral health, home care, and disease prevention.
  • Helping patients understand recommended treatment and the importance of maintaining their oral health.
  • Creating a comfortable, compassionate, and judgment-free experience, especially for patients who may have dental anxiety.
  • Collaborating with our dentists and clinical team to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care.

What We're Looking For:
  • Current New York State Registered Dental Hygienist license.
  • Dental hygiene experience preferred.
  • Experience taking digital X-rays.
  • Dentrix experience preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Dependable, positive, and team-oriented.
  • Compassionate and comfortable working with patients from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred.

Most importantly, we're looking for someone who genuinely cares about people and believes patients deserve to be treated with kindness, patience, and respect.

Compensation:
$60–$65 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.

Benefits:
Eligible team members may receive:
  • Paid time off.
  • Professional development assistance.
  • Continuing education and growth opportunities.
