What is a perinatal?

A perinatal job involves working with individuals during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period to provide medical, emotional, or educational support. Professionals in perinatal roles can include nurses, doctors, midwives, social workers, and mental health specialists. They help ensure both maternal and infant health, offering prenatal care, labor assistance, and postpartum support. Responsibilities may vary based on the specific role and setting, such as hospitals, clinics, or community organizations.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in a perinatal position?

Individuals in Perinatal roles are responsible for monitoring the health and progress of pregnant patients, providing prenatal and postpartum education, and assisting during labor and delivery. Daily tasks may include performing patient assessments, administering medications, interpreting fetal monitoring data, and offering emotional support to mothers and families. Perinatal professionals also work closely with physicians, neonatal specialists, and other healthcare providers to develop and implement appropriate care plans. This collaborative and multifaceted approach helps ensure comprehensive care tailored to the needs of both mothers and infants.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the perinatal position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Perinatal role, you need an in-depth understanding of maternal-fetal medicine, obstetric and neonatal care, typically supported by a degree in nursing or midwifery and licensure such as RN, CNM, or relevant certifications. Familiarity with fetal monitoring systems, electronic health records (EHRs), and obstetric emergency procedures is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, emotional resilience, and the ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams are highly valued. These skills ensure the safety and well-being of both mothers and infants during the critical perinatal period while promoting effective team collaboration.

Job Summary and Responsibilities

As our Residency Faculty Family Medicine with Obstetrics Provider, you will be a pivotal clinician and educator, delivering the highest quality patient care and comprehensive family medicine services, including obstetric care, while actively shaping the next generation of family physicians within our Colorado healthcare system. This role involves a blend of didactic and clinical teaching in both inpatient and outpatient settings – encompassing prenatal, perinatal, and postpartum care, as well as broader family medicine, while contributing to clinical quality improvement initiatives and community benefit programs, ensuring access to top-tier primary and obstetric care for our patients.

You will actively comply with all managed care programs, Medicare, Medicaid, and federal/state reimbursement plans, including our ethical and religious directives. Furthermore, you will lead and participate in various activities focused on promoting clinical excellence and quality improvement within family medicine and obstetric services, engage in medical staff committees, and, when assigned, provide crucial on-call coverage to support both our community's urgent needs and resident supervision.

To be successful in this role, you will be a Board-Certified/Board-Eligible Family Physician with demonstrated training and experience in Obstetrics, holding an active Colorado medical license (or eligibility to obtain one), demonstrating a commitment to continuously developing personal and professional competence through ongoing medical education and maintaining applicable board certification. We seek candidates who embody the highest standards of medical ethics, possess strong communication skills for patient, administrative, and resident interactions, and are dedicated to actively engaging in hospital operational matters, peer review, quality improvement, and providing impactful community benefit services, including charity care and patient education.

  • Serve as a pivotal clinician and educator, providing comprehensive family medicine and obstetric care while actively shaping the next generation of family physicians within a Colorado healthcare system.
  • Deliver a blend of didactic and clinical teaching in both inpatient and outpatient settings, covering prenatal, perinatal, postpartum, and broader family medicine care, and contributing to quality improvement and community benefit.
  • Daily responsibilities include providing expert ambulatory and inpatient care, delivering babies, managing family medicine procedures, supervising residents, and ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations and ethical directives.
