Professionals in perinatal roles can include nurses, doctors, midwives, social workers, and mental health specialists. They help ensure both maternal and infant health, offering prenatal care, labor assistance, and postpartum support. What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Perinatal position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Perinatal role, you need an in-depth understanding of maternal-fetal medicine, obstetric and neonatal care, typically supported by a degree in nursing or midwifery and licensure such as RN, CNM, or relevant certifications. Familiarity with fetal monitoring systems, electronic health records (EHRs), and obstetric emergency procedures is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, emotional resilience, and the ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams are highly valued. Daily tasks may include performing patient assessments, administering medications, interpreting fetal monitoring data, and offering emotional support to mothers and families. Perinatal professionals also work closely with physicians, neonatal specialists, and other healthcare providers to develop and implement appropriate care plans.
