Position Info:

Title:Lead Controls/Algorithm Engineer

Type of Job:Full-Time, Exempt

Work Location:Irvine, CA

Experience Level: 5-10 years total experience

Clearance Type:US Citizenship Required. Ability to obtain a security clearance required.

Job Responsibilities

We are searching for a Lead Controls/Algorithm Engineer to lead the development, analysis, and/or optimization of complex control systems. In this position, you will research, design, simulate, specify, implement, debug, and test control system algorithms for various electrical, mechanical, thermal and optical and optomechanical systems. You should be able to operate independently with minimal direction/supervision in a fast-paced, dynamic, highly technical environment and work on multiple concurrent, cross-functional projects. You should also be able to work collaboratively with responsible electrical, mechanical, and firmware engineers to define sensing requirements, establish control system capabilities, set performance targets, etc. You should also be comfortable working in a start-up environment. Our ideal applicant has a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering or related field with 5-7+ years relevant experience with advanced control systems.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop, test, install, and integrate control systems software solutions related to custom automation, machine vision, feedback systems, and other complex robotic/autonomous systems.
  • Create dynamic models of electrical, mechanical, thermal and optomechanical systems. Models are normally developed in Matlab/Simulink. Python skills are a plus.
  • Deliver high-quality code in an embedded environment
  • Program and integrate various off-the-shelf components (cameras, robots, sensors, motors, etc.).
  • Coordinate with mechanical and electrical interdisciplinary teams.
  • Coordinate with and manage external suppliers.
  • Coordinate with customers to refine requirements and align on project requirements.
  • Coordinate with customers on functional and user interface requirements (HMIs, etc.).
  • Coordinate progress and roadblocks with Project Managers.
  • Support and assist the production team during debug, commissioning, and install of equipment.
  • Assist with technical mentorship, performance assessment, goal setting, and related developmental activities.
  • Assist with hiring and training new team members.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • BS in Electrical, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering or related field with 7+ years relevant experience with advanced control systems. Or MS in same disciplines with 5+ years of similar relevant experience.
  • Strong background in Linear Control Theory, Non-linear Control Theory, and State Estimation.
  • Strong skills using Matlab, Simulink and Python programming language.
  • Experience with the engineering workflow including requirements capture, analysis, flowdown, development, manufacturing and testing/verification.
  • Aerospace research and development experience is a plus.
  • Familiarity with embedded microprocessor design process: compilers, debuggers, IDE.
  • Experience developing in an RTOS environment.
  • Familiarity with lasers, imaging systems, precision pointing systems and electro-optical systems.
  • Experience with advance image processing, artificial intelligence, deep learning and machine learning is a plus.
  • Experience with flight control systems and or robotic systems is a plus.
  • Experience with Agile Development.
  • Be comfortable in a dynamic environment. Able to work effectively work autonomously or within a team environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written). Strong leadership and organizational skills.
  • Experience with DoD programs, processes and requirements is a plus
  • Systems engineering experience and mindset is a strong plus
