Job description

Sterile Processing Technician (Travel)
Position Overview
Support VA medical facilities by providing critical sterile processing services for surgical and medical equipment. This role is essential in maintaining the highest standards of patient care through proper decontamination, sterilization, and processing of medical instruments and equipment.
Position Details:
  • Location:
    • Houston, TX VA Outpatient Clinic
  • Position Type: Full-time (40 hours/week)
  • Schedule: Monday-Friday, 0700-1730 (hours may vary based on surgical department needs)
Key Responsibilities
  • Receive and inspect contaminated instruments from operating rooms, dental clinics, endoscopy, nursing units, eye clinics, wound care, and podiatry
  • Perform decontamination and cleaning procedures following Instructions for Use (IFU) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
  • Assemble and organize surgical instrument sets ranging from simple 4-5 piece sets to complex 90-100 piece sets
  • Operate sterilization equipment including Steam, hydrogen peroxide gas plasma (V-Pro), and high-level disinfecting units
  • Monitor sterilizer performance through prescribed bacteriological tests
  • Process various types of medical equipment including flexible scopes, dental instruments, and microsurgical instruments
  • Maintain accurate documentation in the Censitrac Surgical Instrument Tracking System
  • Ensure compliance with infection control and safety protocols
  • Coordinate with medical/surgical staff for special and emergency requirements
Qualifications
Required:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Knowledge of medical and surgical terminology, infection control, human anatomy, and physiology
  • Experience with sterilization equipment and processes
  • Ability to stand/walk for extended periods and lift up to 25 pounds
  • Must pass VA security background check
  • Complete required VA training programs
  • Meet all medical screening requirements including immunizations
  • Valid certification from IAHCSMM or CBSPD (Preferred)
  • Experience with Censitrac or similar instrument tracking systems (Preferred)
