What does 'per diem' mean in a job context?

In a job context, 'per diem' refers to employees who work on an as-needed basis rather than a fixed, regular schedule. Per diem workers are typically paid a daily rate or by the shift, and their hours can vary depending on the employer's needs. This type of position is common in industries like healthcare, education, and hospitality, where staffing needs can fluctuate. Per diem jobs offer flexibility for both the worker and the employer, but they usually do not include the same benefits as full-time positions.

Per Diem employees often face unpredictable or fluctuating work schedules, which can make it challenging to plan personal commitments or maintain consistent income. Building a strong network and gaining experience in high-paying industries can also help achieve this income level.
