What is a Per Diem WIC RN?

A Per Diem WIC RN is a registered nurse who works on an as-needed basis for the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program. This nurse provides health assessments, nutrition counseling, breastfeeding support, and referrals to families enrolled in WIC. Per diem means the RN does not have a set schedule but fills in as needed, offering flexibility for both the nurse and the employer. The role requires a valid RN license and knowledge of maternal and child health.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Per Diem WIC RN, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem WIC RN, you need a registered nursing license, experience in maternal-child health, and knowledge of nutrition and public health guidelines. Familiarity with WIC program software, electronic health records, and state or federal certification requirements is essential. Exceptional interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and flexibility help you connect with diverse clients and adapt to varying work schedules. These skills ensure effective client assessment, education, and support, promoting positive health outcomes for women, infants, and children in the community.

How does a Per Diem WIC RN typically balance flexibility with the need for consistent, high-quality client care?

As a Per Diem WIC RN, you’ll enjoy a flexible schedule, often filling in on an as-needed basis, which is ideal for those seeking work-life balance. However, this flexibility comes with the challenge of quickly adapting to varying clinic workflows and client needs. You'll work alongside a multidisciplinary team including nutritionists, social workers, and other nurses to provide vital health assessments, breastfeeding support, and nutrition counseling to women, infants, and children. Success in this role relies on strong communication skills and the ability to deliver consistent, high-quality care, even when working with different teams or at unfamiliar sites.
