What is a per diem unit secretary?

Per Diem Unit Secretaries are administrative professionals who work in healthcare settings, such as hospitals or clinics, on an as-needed basis rather than a regular full-time or part-time schedule. Their main responsibilities include managing patient records, answering phones, coordinating communication between medical staff, and performing various clerical duties to support the unit's daily operations. The 'per diem' aspect means they are scheduled according to the facility's immediate staffing needs, offering flexibility for both the employer and the employee. This role requires excellent organizational and communication skills, as well as familiarity with medical terminology and healthcare protocols.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a per diem unit secretary?

To thrive as a Per Diem Unit Secretary, you need strong organizational skills, knowledge of medical terminology, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with hospital information systems, scheduling software, and electronic health records is typically required. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask help you excel in a fast-paced environment. These skills ensure efficient unit operations, accurate documentation, and effective support for both clinical staff and patients.

How does scheduling flexibility work for a per diem unit secretary?

As a Per Diem Unit Secretary, you can usually expect a high degree of flexibility with your work schedule, since per diem positions are designed to fill staffing gaps or cover peak periods. Shifts may vary in length and timing, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on the needs of the unit. While you can often indicate your availability, being open to a range of shifts and responding to last-minute requests can increase your chances of getting more hours. It's important to communicate proactively with the scheduling coordinator and understand the facility's policies on shift assignment.
