What is a per diem staff RN?

A Per Diem Staff RN is a registered nurse who works on an as-needed basis rather than having a set schedule. They are typically called in to fill staffing gaps, cover for absent staff, or handle periods of high patient volume. Per diem nurses have the flexibility to choose their shifts but do not usually receive the same benefits as full-time employees. This role is ideal for nurses seeking flexibility or additional income, but it may not offer guaranteed hours.

How does scheduling flexibility typically work for per diem staff RNs, and what should I expect regarding shift availability?

Per Diem Staff RNs usually enjoy a high degree of scheduling flexibility, as they are not committed to regular full-time hours. Shifts are often assigned based on facility needs and your stated availability, which means you may be offered last-minute or weekend shifts. However, during periods of lower patient census, shift availability can decrease, so consistent hours are not guaranteed. It's important to communicate your preferred shifts and remain adaptable, as this can increase your chances of being scheduled regularly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem staff RN, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Staff RN, you need a current RN license, strong clinical judgment, and broad experience in patient care across different units. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems and up-to-date certifications like BLS or ACLS are often required. Flexibility, quick adaptability, and effective communication are essential soft skills for adjusting to varying shifts and teams. These skills enable per diem nurses to provide safe, high-quality care while seamlessly integrating into diverse clinical environments.
