What is a per diem sports chaplain?

Per Diem Sports Chaplains are spiritual care professionals who provide on-call or temporary chaplaincy services to athletes, coaches, and sports teams. They typically work on an as-needed basis, offering support during specific events, games, or seasons rather than holding a permanent, full-time position with a team. Their responsibilities can include leading prayers, offering counseling, supporting team members during crises, and helping foster a positive, ethical team environment. Per Diem chaplains often serve multiple teams or organizations and may be called upon for special occasions or when regular chaplains are unavailable.

A Per Diem Sports Chaplain often works on an as-needed basis, providing spiritual and emotional support to athletes and staff. They collaborate closely with coaching staff to ensure their presence complements team routines and events, such as games, practices, or critical meetings. Building trust is key, as chaplains must respect team culture and confidentiality while offering guidance and crisis support when required. Their flexible schedule allows them to respond to both planned and emergent needs, making effective communication and adaptability essential in this dynamic environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem sports chaplain, and why are they important?
