Job description

USR – Well Service Field Mechanic Levels 1-4  

Job Summary

The Field Mechanic:  Levels 1 – 4 is responsible for the maintenance and repair of drilling rigs and other oilfield equipment.

Other Mechanics, Yard Hands, Rig Managers, Yard office personnel and Hot Shot Drivers, Service Manager / Field Supervisor

External Relationships

Specific Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Works in a safe, healthy, and environmentally protective manner
  • Follows direction in close communication with supervisor and rig managers
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and organized work environment
  • Demonstrates computer proficiency and documents work, per Ensign standards
  • Inspects finished work to ensure quality and completeness
  • Demonstrates willingness & availability to work long hours & weekends when requested, on short notice
  • Works occasionally in the shop
  • Obeys all DOT rules and regulations and is willing and able to travel when and where requested
  • Reports and corrects any unsafe work practices and safety hazards
  • Participates in all safety programs, processes and requirements
  • Attends Operations Training up to two times per year and up to five days per training at designated locations
  • Performs other duties as directed by management
  • Level 1:
    • Understands and is proficient in lubrication, fluid changes, brake change, and other minor repairs of vehicles, trucks, forklifts, and loaders
    • Demonstrates a basic understanding of rig operations and components
    • Changes out radiators, starters, turbo chargers, and other minor on-site repairs
    • Performs and documents mud pump inspections
    • Understands and is observant in identifying potential rig site equipment issues requiring attention
    • Verifies that asset numbers are stamped on equipment and stamps asset numbers when needed
    • Participates in an on-call field mechanic rotation and is available and ready to work 24/7 when on-call
  • Level 2:
    • Understands and Is proficient in all Field Mechanic Level 1 duties
    • Understands and is proficient and confident in skills to work independently
    • Troubleshoots equipment problems and issues both over the phone and on-site
    • Repairs rig equipment on location, e.g.  mud pumps, engines, clutches, torque converters, motors and loaders
    • Understands and is proficient in almost all loader related repairs
    • Troubleshoots electrical problems
    • Sets up for repairs before shutting equipment or rig down
    • Leads minor special projects effectively
    • Mentors and oversees Field Mechanic Level 1
  • Level 3:
    • Understands and is proficient in all Field Mechanic Level 1 and 2 duties
    • Passes and maintains certification in Caterpillar DLMS on-line training, Caterpillar ET Computer
    • Training, Natural Gas Engines 1 & 2 courses, and other training classes as required
    • Performs engine repairs in the field effectively
    • Plans work and orders parts for those jobs ahead of time when possible
    • Leads moderate-in-scope special projects effectively
    • Mentors and oversees Field Mechanics Levels 1 and 2
  • Level 4:
    • Understands and is proficient in all Field Mechanic Level 1, 2 and 3 duties
    • Performs as and is viewed by most others as a lead mechanic: demonstrates confidence, is well trained, and able to address almost any problem that arises
    • Leads major special projects effectively
    • Leads field service when supervisor is not available effectively
    • Mentors and oversees Field Mechanics Levels 1, 2 and 3

  • Certifications - Maintains technical and safety certifications required by company or government agencies; remains current on all OSHA, EUSD and other required training
  • Drug-free workplace - Conforms to a drug-free workplace, not be under the influence of mind-altering prescription or non-prescription drugs, including alcohol and other drugs of abuse.
  • Occupational Health and Safety – Understands fully the Ensign Health and Safety policy and self-responsibility for own health and safety at work;  Demonstrates responsibility to avoid adversely affecting the health and safety of others through any act or omission
    • Uses the correct protective clothing and equipment as provided by Ensign and guards against misuse or damage to such equipment
    • Reports any hazardous situations arising in the workplace that cannot be self corrected, or injury incurred during the course of work, no matter how minor
    • Avoids injury resulting from manual handling tasks, by use of risk assessment, correct mechanical handling equipment and correct manual handling techniques

  • Understands and is capable of reading all safety / training requirements and materials
  • Understands and is proficient in basic mechanical and technical skills

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Reads and understands hydraulic and electrical schematics
    • Level 1:  High School diploma or GED is preferred
    • Level 2:  High School diploma or GED and 1 year of experience is preferred
    • Level 3:  High School diploma or GED, Technical Degree and/or 3 years of experience is preferred
    • Level 4:  High School diploma or GED, Technical Degree and/or 5 years of experience is preferred

Qualifications

The employee must:

  • be at least 18 years of age
  • pass a post-offer physical examination, fitness testing, safety aptitude test, drug tests & background check
  • provide proof and maintain proper legal authorization to work in the United States
  • maintain a valid driver’s license, good driving record and medical card, and meet Ensign Insurance Requirements to drive
  • arrange for reliable transportation to and from work and training locations
  • speak and read English well enough  to understand verbal and written safety postings, alerts and announcements, communicate with co-workers and be able to participate in job safety analysis meetings
