What is a per diem remote triage nurse?

A Per Diem Remote Triage Nurse is a registered nurse who works on an as-needed basis to assess patient symptoms and provide medical advice over the phone or via digital platforms. These nurses typically work remotely, helping patients determine the urgency of their health concerns and advising on next steps, such as home care or seeking in-person treatment. They play a crucial role in managing patient flow and ensuring timely care, often for healthcare organizations, insurance companies, or telehealth services. The per diem aspect means they do not have a fixed schedule and can choose shifts based on their availability.

How does a per diem remote triage nurse typically interact with patients and care teams throughout a shift?

As a Per Diem Remote Triage Nurse, you primarily assess patients’ symptoms and concerns over the phone or via telehealth platforms, guiding them to the appropriate level of care. You’ll collaborate closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, and sometimes social workers to ensure patients receive timely and accurate recommendations. The role requires excellent communication skills, as you’ll document all interactions and escalate urgent cases to the clinical team. Flexibility is key, as your daily caseload and shift types may vary based on patient demand and organizational needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem remote triage nurse, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Remote Triage Nurse, you need a valid RN license, strong clinical judgment, and experience in telephone triage or acute care settings. Familiarity with triage protocols, telehealth platforms, and electronic health record (EHR) systems is crucial. Outstanding communication, critical thinking, and the ability to work independently are key soft skills that set top performers apart. These competencies are essential for providing accurate assessments, ensuring patient safety, and delivering quality care remotely.
