Job description

FindTalent is hiring a highly skilled Substation Commissioning Engineer to support critical utility infrastructure projects across the U.S. This remote-based role is ideal for a technically proficient professional who can work independently while traveling full-time to high-voltage substation construction sites. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and executing the commissioning, testing, and operational verification of substation systems up to 500kV.

This role plays a key part in ensuring systems are installed correctly, operate reliably, and meet all design and compliance requirements. While the position is remote, it requires 100% travel to various project sites nationwide, with per diem, travel support, and regular paid trips home.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead substation commissioning activities for transmission and distribution projects from pre-energization through closeout.

  • Perform and supervise functional testing of protection and control systems, relays, and high-voltage equipment.

  • Validate field installations against engineering drawings and technical specifications.

  • Troubleshoot equipment and system issues, recommend solutions, and direct corrective actions on-site.

  • Develop and manage commissioning procedures, isolation plans, outage schedules, and safety protocols.

  • Collaborate closely with field crews, testing teams, and client stakeholders to ensure safe and efficient commissioning.

  • Review and approve test results and verify correct equipment operation per system design.

  • Coordinate with engineering to identify and address design conflicts or field modifications.

  • Ensure documentation is complete and accurate, including test reports, redlined drawings, and regulatory submissions.

  • Provide real-time updates to project management and maintain consistent communication with all stakeholders.

Education, Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field (foreign equivalents accepted).

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in substation field commissioning, construction, or protection & control engineering.

  • Strong working knowledge of substation equipment and protection schemes, including relay logic and SCADA integration.

  • Proficiency with relay testing and communication software such as Enoserve RTS, Doble Protection Suite, SEL Compass, and AcSELerator Quickset.

  • Familiarity with NETA, IEEE, and utility specifications related to substation construction and testing.

  • Experience testing and commissioning equipment such as breakers, transformers, CTs, PTs, relays, panels, and battery systems.

  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills in field environments.

  • Ability to read and interpret complex electrical drawings and system schematics.

  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted driverโ€™s license.

  • Must pass drug screening and background checks.

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

  • Willing and able to travel 100% for extended periods; per diem and scheduled paid trips home are provided.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with substation commissioning for voltage levels up to 500kV.

  • Familiarity with SEL, GE, and ABB digital relays.

  • Previous leadership in field-based substation or utility projects.

  • Working knowledge of construction sequencing and safety practices for energized environments.
