Job description

UHealthSolutions, Inc. is seeking to hire a per diem Radiology – Ultrasound Technologist to work within The Federal Medical Center in Butner, NC. FMC Butner is a United States federal prison in North Carolina for male inmates of all security levels who have special health needs. It is part of the Butner Federal Correctional Complex (FCC Butner) and is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), a division of the United States Department of Justice. It is located near the Research Triangle area of Durham, Raleigh and Chapel Hill.

POSITION SUMMARY:

To perform diagnostic sonographic examinations utilizing ultrasound equipment to locate, evaluate and record critical, functional, pathological, and anatomical data.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Clean, disinfect, and prepare all equipment for use.
  • Schedule and coordinate tests, record tests results, and prepare and maintain operational logs.
  • Calibrate and maintain equipment.
  • Advise Radiologists or referring physician of significant abnormalities that require immediate attention and visualization during patient examination.
  • Perform ultrasound examinations of the abdomen, neck, chest, and extremities, retroperitoneal space for the purpose of acquiring high quality examinations that assists in the diagnostic and treatment of patient medical disorders.
  • Participate in the training of Physicians, Radiology Technicians, or other staff as needed to provide an understanding of the principles of ultrasound and how it relates to other diagnostic exams.
  • Perform routine clerical procedures for the purpose of maintain accurate ultrasound records so that easy recall of patient examination may be achieved.
  • May also be required to perform diagnostic radiographic examinations.
  • Assist Radiologist in the performance of cyst punctures, aspiration biopsies, and catheter placements for the placements for the purpose of diagnostic treatment using ultrasound techniques.
  • Develop and maintain patient prep procedures so that patients understand the proper preparation for ultrasound examination in an effort to minimize delays of examination.
  • Perform quality assurance testing on the ultrasound unit using phantom, test tools, tech checklists, etc. for assuring peak performance of the equipment.
  • Review all applicable request and patient histories through PACS and BEMR.
  • Consult with Radiologist regarding patient exams and protocols as needed.
  • Monitor patient’s condition pre and post imaging to ensure patient safety and comfort.
  • Explain procedures to patient to reduce anxieties and obtain cooperation, to include need to for contrast.
  • Prep and assist all patients as needed for the examination.
  • Position and immobilize patient for proper examination.
  • Operate independently and without direct supervision when performing examination procedures.
  • Ensure timeliness of all exams as per facility protocol.
  • Maintain all logs and service manuals as required.
  • Coordinate all transport and treatment with other department and officers as necessary for special patients.
  • Maintain, inventory and order all necessary supplies related to CT.
  • Follow quality assurance guidelines and maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Perform equipment and quality checks and troubleshoot problems.
  • Ensure service calls and notification of pertinent team members as applicable.
  • Review and file transcribed ordered and results.
  • Maintain a clean environment for all work areas.
  • Perform clerical functions as necessary, including, but not limited to, maintenance and documentation of patient records and/or required forms, assigning accession number, obtaining prior records on patients, providing pre-test information to patients, answering telephone calls, and assisting the Radiologist as needed.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Must pass pre-employment examination.
  • Background and investigation required.
  • English language proficiency required.
  • All other duties and responsibilities as required by contract.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BL) Certification.

EDUCATION

Must be a graduate of a form Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation and Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Active certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in the specialty, is preferred.

Language Skills:

  • Ability to read and communicate effectively in English
  • Fluency in additional (second) language desirable

  • Skills validation/certification of competencies for the duties and responsibilities required for position.
  • Maintain North Carolina License requirements for CEUs.
  • Work involves contact with patients of all ages, family members, physicians, nursing, and all other members of the health care team.
  • Work is performed in all areas of the institution.
  • Work may require lifting or pushing in excess of 30 pounds.
  • Work may require carrying objects approximately 20 pounds
  • Work requires walking, running, climbing and bending.

Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of urinalysis, physical, and background investigation. All applicants are subject to National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and credit checks.

Successful completion of the “Introduction to Correctional Techniques”, three week training course is required.

This position has been identified as test designated. Incumbents will be subject to urinalysis testing under the BOP Drug Free Workplace Plan.
