What is a per diem postpartum RN?

A Per Diem Postpartum RN is a registered nurse who works on an as-needed basis, providing care to mothers and newborns after childbirth. Per diem positions offer flexibility, allowing nurses to choose shifts based on hospital needs and their availability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem postpartum RN, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Postpartum RN, you need expertise in maternal-newborn care, postpartum assessments, and breastfeeding support, along with a current RN license and experience in obstetric or postpartum units. Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMRs), fetal monitoring systems, and hospital protocols is essential. Compassion, adaptability, and strong communication skills help you provide quality care and quickly integrate with changing teams.
