Employer & IndustryAirlines, charter companies, on-demand servicesCharter companies, private operators, corporate flight services

Per Diem Pilots and Charter Pilots both hold commercial pilot licenses and work in similar environments, often flying for private or on-demand services. The main difference lies in employment structure: Per Diem Pilots are typically hired on an as-needed basis with per diem pay, while Charter Pilots usually work for specific charter companies with scheduled or on-demand flights. Understanding these distinctions helps pilots choose the right career path based on work style and employment terms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Per Diem Pilot, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Pilot, you need a valid commercial or airline transport pilot license, extensive flight hours, and thorough knowledge of aviation safety regulations. Familiarity with specific aircraft types, flight planning software, and navigation systems is typically required, along with any relevant type ratings. Strong decision-making, adaptability, and effective communication are essential soft skills, especially when working with new crews or adapting to varying schedules. These competencies are crucial to ensuring safe, efficient operations and maintaining professionalism in unpredictable or rapidly changing aviation environments.

What are the typical scheduling and on-call expectations for a Per Diem Pilot?

Per Diem Pilots often work on an as-needed basis, meaning their schedules can be highly variable and require flexibility. You may be called in with short notice to cover flights due to crew shortages, medical transports, or last-minute charter requests. This role suits individuals comfortable with irregular hours and the ability to quickly adapt to new assignments and aircraft types. Clear communication with dispatchers and operators is essential, as is maintaining readiness through ongoing training and certifications. Many Per Diem Pilots appreciate the autonomy and variety this structure offers, though it can be challenging for those seeking predictable hours.

What are Per Diem Pilots?

Per Diem Pilots are professional pilots who are hired on an as-needed or temporary basis rather than as full-time, permanent employees. They may fly for various clients, such as private aircraft owners, charter companies, or corporate flight departments, and are typically paid a daily rate (per diem) for their services. This role offers flexibility for both the pilot and the employer, allowing pilots to take on assignments based on their availability and employers to address short-term staffing needs. Per Diem Pilots must maintain the same certifications and qualifications as full-time pilots and are responsible for ensuring compliance with all aviation regulations.
