What is a per diem pharmacy?

A Per Diem Pharmacy job refers to a pharmacy position where the employee works on an as-needed basis rather than a fixed schedule. Per diem pharmacists or pharmacy technicians are typically called in to cover staff shortages, vacations, or busy periods. These roles offer flexibility, allowing workers to choose shifts that fit their availability, but may not guarantee a consistent number of hours each week. Per diem positions can be found in hospitals, retail pharmacies, or long-term care facilities, and are ideal for those seeking work-life balance or supplemental income.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem pharmacist?

To thrive as a Per Diem Pharmacist, you need a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree, active pharmacist licensure, and strong knowledge of medication therapy and pharmacy law. Familiarity with pharmacy management systems, dispensing technology, and electronic health records is typically required. Excellent communication, adaptability, and attention to detail help you work effectively in varied settings and with diverse teams. These skills ensure safe, accurate medication dispensing and enable seamless integration into different pharmacies as needed.

What are some common challenges faced by per diem pharmacy staff, and how can they be addressed?

Per diem pharmacy staff often face challenges such as quickly adapting to different pharmacy settings, varying team dynamics, and learning new workflows or technology systems with minimal onboarding. Many successful per diem pharmacists and technicians also keep up-to-date with standard pharmacy procedures and state regulations to ensure a smooth transition between assignments.
