What is a per diem peripheral vascular tech?

A Per Diem Peripheral Vascular Tech is a healthcare professional who specializes in performing diagnostic imaging and tests related to the peripheral vascular system, such as arteries and veins outside the heart and brain, on an as-needed or flexible basis. They often use ultrasound and other non-invasive techniques to help physicians diagnose vascular conditions. Working per diem means they are not full-time employees; instead, they work shifts as required, providing flexibility for both the employer and the tech. This role typically requires specialized training and certification in vascular technology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem peripheral vascular tech?

To thrive as a Per Diem Peripheral Vascular Tech, you need in-depth knowledge of vascular anatomy, proficiency in performing vascular ultrasounds, and typically an associate degree or completion of an accredited vascular technology program, along with ARDMS or CCI certification. Familiarity with ultrasound machines, PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System), and vascular lab protocols is essential. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to adapt quickly to varying schedules and patient needs are critical soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate diagnostic results, timely patient care, and seamless integration within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

What are the typical work schedules and expectations for a per diem peripheral vascular tech?

As a Per Diem Peripheral Vascular Tech, you can expect a flexible work schedule that is based on the facility's needs, which may include covering shifts at short notice or during peak patient times. This role often requires adaptability, as you may work different shifts, including weekends or evenings, without a guaranteed number of hours each week. You’ll be responsible for performing vascular ultrasound procedures, collaborating with physicians and other technologists, and maintaining high-quality patient care standards. Being per diem also offers opportunities to gain experience at multiple facilities, which can enhance your career growth and professional network.
