How much do per diem pca jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 13, 2026, the average hourly pay for per diem pca in the United States is $15.27, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $13.46 and $16.11 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Per Diem PCA, and why are they important?

To excel as a Per Diem PCA (Personal Care Assistant), you generally need a high school diploma or equivalent, basic healthcare knowledge, and sometimes state-specific certification or training. Familiarity with patient care documentation systems and equipment like mobility aids is often required. Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and reliability help PCAs build rapport with clients and adapt to varying schedules and care needs. These skills are crucial to providing consistent, high-quality care and ensuring patient comfort and safety in a dynamic work environment.

What is a Per Diem PCA?

A Per Diem PCA, or Personal Care Assistant, is a healthcare worker who provides support to patients with daily living activities on an as-needed basis, rather than a regular full-time schedule. Per diem means 'per day,' so these PCAs typically work only when they are needed, filling in for other staff or covering busy shifts. Their responsibilities can include assisting with bathing, dressing, mobility, meal preparation, and companionship. Working per diem offers flexibility for both the employee and employer, but hours may vary week to week depending on the facility’s needs.

Who gets paid more, CNA or PCA?

Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) generally earn higher wages than Personal Care Assistants (PCAs) because CNAs typically require formal certification and perform more clinical tasks. PCAs often provide basic personal care and support, with lower pay rates reflecting their scope of work. Salary differences can vary by location and employer, but CNAs usually have higher earning potential.

What jobs pay 4000 a week without a degree?

Per Diem Personal Care Assistants (PCAs) can sometimes earn around $4,000 weekly depending on hours worked, location, and agency pay rates. These roles typically require caregiving skills, flexibility, and sometimes certification, but often do not require a college degree. High hourly rates and overtime can contribute to reaching this income level in the healthcare or home care sectors.

What is the highest paying per diem job?

Per diem personal care assistants (PCAs) typically earn higher pay rates compared to full-time roles due to their flexible schedules and short-term assignments. The highest paying per diem healthcare roles often include specialized nursing, anesthesia, or radiology positions, which require advanced certifications and skills. Compensation varies by location, experience, and demand, with some specialized healthcare per diem jobs offering significantly higher hourly rates.

What are the typical scheduling expectations and flexibility for a Per Diem PCA position?

Per Diem PCAs (Personal Care Assistants) are typically scheduled on an as-needed basis, which provides significant flexibility but can also mean unpredictable hours. While you may have the opportunity to choose shifts that fit your availability, you might be asked to work evenings, weekends, or holidays to fill staffing gaps. This role is ideal for those seeking a non-traditional work schedule or supplemental income, but it's important to be adaptable to changing patient needs and facility requirements. Communication with supervisors about your availability is key to maximizing your hours and maintaining a good work-life balance.

Where do PCTs get paid the most?

Per Diem Patient Care Assistants (PCAs) typically earn higher wages in regions with a higher cost of living and greater demand for healthcare services. Salaries can also vary based on experience, certifications, and the healthcare facility, with some areas offering premium pay for night shifts or overtime. Overall, urban areas and states with strong healthcare industries tend to offer higher compensation for per diem PCA roles.
