Job description

Per Diem Registered Nurse

Milton Academy is seeking a Per Diem Registered Nurse to join our K-12 Health Center team. The Health Center operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the academic year, and per diem nurses provide coverage as needed to support student care. Shifts may include days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays. We are seeking candidates who are flexible, dependable, and comfortable working across a variety of shifts. We're looking for a compassionate and collaborative nursing professional dedicated to the health and well-being of our students.

Responsibilities include:

  • Delivering direct nursing care, including assessment, treatment, and management of acute and chronic conditions, in accordance with the nurse's scope of practice.
  • Triage and referral of students to appropriate levels of care as needed.
  • Collaborating closely with a multidisciplinary team—including fellow nurses, school counselors, athletic trainers, faculty, and school physicians—to ensure coordinated and holistic care.
  • Communicating effectively with students, parents, and guardians regarding health concerns, treatment plans, and wellness recommendations, prioritizing student safety and confidentiality at all times.
  • Administering medications, treatments, and health procedures in line with physician orders and school protocols.
  • Maintaining accurate and timely documentation in the student health record.
  • Tracking immunizations, chronic condition management, and other ongoing health requirements
  • Participating in regular staff meetings and training and case reviews to support professional development and team cohesion.
  • Both day nurses and weekend/overnight nurses are expected to be active, engaged members of the health team, ensuring continuity of care across shifts and contributing to a safe, supportive environment for students.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Holds current RN licensure in Massachusetts
  • Brings experience working with school-age children and adolescents
  • Demonstrates flexibility, strong communication skills, and a collaborative mindset

Supervision to be received: Supervised by the Director of Health Services

Education/Certification/Licensure

Required: An active RN license with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

Preferred: A bachelor's degree in Nursing

Experience:

  • Registered Nurse licensed in Massachusetts
  • Minimum two years of experience in school nursing or pediatric/adolescent nursing, preferably in a physician's office or outpatient setting
  • Strong understanding of the developmental needs of school-aged children and adolescents
  • Demonstrated experience in pediatric and adolescent health assessment
  • Applicants must be willing to complete the Massachusetts Medication Administration Program (MAP) training and phlebotomy training if they are not already certified or competent in these areas.

Competencies:

  • Proficiency in nursing assessment, treatment and triage within the scope of practice.
  • Ability to work independently within the scope of RN practice and seek guidance appropriately from school physicians or fellow nursing staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, particularly in working with children, teens, and their families
  • Demonstrated ability to use multiple digital platforms; specifically Google products and basic understanding of and/or experience with electronic health records.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external constituencies.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and related issues.
  • Receptive to supervision and professional development.
  • Desire to be a part of a dynamic educational community.

Physical Abilities:

  • Must be able to work shifts as scheduled, understanding that this position includes hours that are considered essential.
  • Must be able to move around the Milton Academy campus without restriction.
  • Must be able to assist students with mobility issues and move about buildings with multiple staircases.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Must be able to regularly lift and/or move 25 to 30 pounds.
